And it's snarkily hilarious. I do like the way a member of that local NAACP board said it was the woman's work that mattered to them, not her race, and that being black is not a requirement to serve with the NAACP, and never has been.

I'd be more sympathetic if people here didn't act like they knew what they were saying when they were saying something very much wrong.

No matter what happens, no matter what my last words may end up being, I want everyone to claim that they were:
"If you strike me down, I shall become more powerful than you could possibly imagine."

I think that just gave her PTSD again.

Melody Hensley. Who as far as I know has not said anything about all men being rapists? But I don't exactly keep track of her opinions.

For a year or few whenever someone wants to make a joke about radical feminists (or simply use a straw-feminist to set up a joke) that picture of her is used. I just assumed her face had been picked by random.

Usually the jokes are something like this:
No matter what happens, no matter what my last words may end up being, I want everyone to claim that they were:

She looks like Sarah Palin's anti-matter doppelganger. Should they meet IRL and shake hands, they would both 'splode.

I think the amount of shit Hensley gets is undeserved. She has said some dumb stuff (much like, oh, everybody else on the internet), but most of the attacks on her are because of her saying that she got PTSD from online harassment. It's usually mocked as "boo hoo being on twitter is just as bad as being a war veteran!!!", which is kinda of, um, fucking stupid. You can get PTSD from all sorts of things, being on twitter and being a victim of online harassment are not the same thing, and people have in fact committed suicide from online harassment. Almost like we're social animals who derive part of our self-estimate from our interactions with other people and being exposed to constant messages of hate can fuck that up for us or something.

Also, sorry if this sounds like it's directed at you, askold. It's not, you just posted a funny picture. I just felt like venting a bit on that.

Because suggesting media oversight makes you an autocrat.

Media oversight in what way, though? Insisting stories be vetted might be helpful, if that could even be pulled off.

But that is an Aussie pol on the cover, and there's a very conservative, corporation-whorish party in control atm. Oz gave us Rupert Murdoch, who controls the cadence of international media by shouting loudest and longest ad nauseum to dominate the narrative. He controls the average person's shallow set of knee jerk opinions. I'd love to see a way to make Murdoch's news outlets pay huge fines for all their lying bullshit. But there is just no way to keep such oversight from falling into the grubby hands of hacks and pollwhores every other election cycle.
