We have Thanksgiving, Saint Patrick's Day, Columbus day and Leif Erikson day. Unfortunantly, nothing for the Scots to my knowledge though.

Does anyone really need a day?  Or even a month?  Shouldn't people treat each other with dignity and awareness every day?
I kind of think race/culture days are just a token to assuage white guilt over being the dominating demographic in the US (And a few other countries).
IMHO white folks shouldn't feel guilty about what their ancestors did, other races shouldn't feel 'owed', and people need to stop being dicks in general.

White people shouldn't feel guilty but minorities are owed. For centuries they were kept down under a white majority, as slaves or they were driven off their land or just outright shot. Even after the Civil War, blacks still suffered heavily from racism and then the Jim Crow laws legislated racism. Native Americans have had their land titles stripped away and suffered from genocide, which many people to this day refuse to acknowledge. And to claim that racism is dead today would be wilful blindness.

One is owed equal rights, treatment, and opportunities.  One is owed for their own personal suffering, humiliation, discrimination...  But if you're a person of a minority race, I don't believe you're owed some form of clan debt incurred by one person's ancestors against your ancestors.  And sure, I might say that as a privileged mostly-caucasian Canadian, but in fairness, how many cultures have NEVER at some point in their history done some hideous inhumane thing to the people of another?
