The textbook, “America: Land I Love," includes a section on the counterculture movement of the 1960s.

Here's a paragraph taken from that section, which was published Wednesday by AmericaBlog.com:


Many young people turned to drugs and immoral lifestyles; these youth became known as hippies. They went without bathing, wore dirty, ragged, unconventional clothing, and deliberately broke all codes of politeness or manners. Rock music played an important part in the hippie movement and had great influence over the hippies. Many of the rock musicians they followed belonged to Eastern religious cults or practiced Satan worship.

It's not clear which school is using the aforementioned textbook. John Aravosis, who published the text on AmericaBlog, said the source was "a friend" who sent him a photo of the section.

They came back for a short while in the mid to late 90s.  bell bottoms, peace signs, psychedelic mushrooms, flowers, and band T-shirts were everywhere.   Strange times.

Schools suck because we don't give the DoE any true power to enforce standards - and when we do we get No Child Left Intelligent - if we wanted to give our schools a bit higher standards, when shit like this happens, or the fiasco with the Texas BoE the government needs to step in and say "Yeah.. No, hell no, and a double side-order of fuck no. You're not doing that, your curriculum has to meet a certain level of scientific scrutiny and historical and intellectual accuracy - those books do not.

Problem is keeping it from being abused by those with screwed up agendas. Sometimes, educationally, I really despise my country. If the rest of the world gets it, why don't we. Why can't we kick the anti-intellectuals out?

Sad part is I went to a Private Catholic Christian school and I got a better education than most people I know from America! In Kansas!
