I'll be the Minister of Justice.
I'll be Minister of Magic.
Can I be Minister of Honesty?
Sure, there should probably be checks and balances on magic anyway.
Seriously, the Harry Potter universe is very dystopian if you think about it too hard. You can sell virtually anything you want to and the Ministry can't (or won't) enforce it (for fuck's sake, one could sell date rape drugs
on the street), but they have the resources necessary to invade the privacy of almost every single citizen. Since a wizard's training takes up all their school years, they do not learn any mundane skills like math. (I think that Arithmancy and Muggle Studies are mentioned as possible courses, but they're only considered electives and are optional.)
And then there's my feelings about Slytherin. Despite their racism, I still think they get a bad rap in the books. (IMO, Slytherin didn't stay out of the war against Voldemort because they necessarily
supported what he was doing, but because a sizable number of the students may have had relatives who were Death Eaters, and the Slytherins, who seem to place a huge emphasis on family loyalty and honor, probably wanted to avoid the possibility of having to face their own blood relatives in battle.)
Aaand this thread just took a complete derail from Israel to Harry Potter and why they're both dystopias.
