HIV 'cures' girl's cancer

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/northamerica/usa/9738355/Emily-Whitehead-girl-whose-cancer-was-cured-by-HIV.html

Quote
When chemotherapy failed to work for Emily Whitehead, diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia, she underwent a new experimental treatment at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.

It involved tricking her immune system into fighting the cancer cells - and, six months later, Emily remains in remission.

She was one of a dozen people to have had the treatment. Three adults also had complete remissions, with two of them now clear of cancer for more than two years.

Four other adults showed improvements but did not go into complete remission. One child improved but then relapsed, and the treatment did not work for two adults.

The patients each had millions of T-cells removed. Using the disabled form of HIV, these were modified to attack cancer cells before being put back into their systems.

See, this is what I like about us humans.

We can turn one of our greatest plagues (figuratively speaking) into one of our greatest cures.

Science, IT WORKS, BITCHES!
There is light and darkness in the world, to be sure.  However, there's no harm to be had in walking in the shade or shadows.

Great work.

I must admit though, I am always weary about doctors using modified viruses to treat something. Viruses are just so mutable that all it takes is something to go wrong and you can have a whole new outbreak, which with something like HIV is pretty scary. Still given that these people would probably have died from cancer anyway they didn't really have anything to loose. Good for those that it worked for.

It is a pity that it did not work at all on two of the patients. I wonder why not and how that can be fixed.

The 2nd article states that in at least one of the cases, the patient was 79yrs old. It is entirely possible that his body was unable to put up much of a fight at that point. I believe the other patient was older as well, but I'm tired and words are starting to jumble together in my head. Still, the doctors involved sound confident that they can refine the treatment and make it more effective.

Use HIV to cure leukemia, use a leukemia treatment to cure AIDS....

We may be on to something here.
That said, I've stopped trying to anticipate what people around here want a while ago, I've found it makes things smoother.
For I was an hungred, and ye told me to pull myself up by my bootstraps: I was thirsty, and ye demanded payment for the privilege of thine urine: I was a stranger, and ye deported me: naked, and ye arrested me for indecency.

No kidding.

To me this whole thing is just further proof of how amazing science is when used for the greater good.

Now if we can only get cancer to cure HIV we can have them cancel each other out.

Yes it is a rather creepy face he's making. He's kind of shot passed "refreshing satisfaction" and landed on "I'm going to rape your mouth".

Now if we can only get cancer to cure HIV we can have them cancel each other out.

Let us put them in a vast colosseum where they shall fight to the death for our imperial amusement.
