Worst (Best?) Videogame Failures
« on: February 05, 2012, 12:56:55 am »
Title says it all, really. I have 2 at the moment:

1. That time in Portal I spent a week stuck in an air vent because I didn't know there was a crouch button.
2. That time in Dirge of Cerberus I couldn't find the door I needed in the Nibelheim Mansion & got so frustrated that I tried to shoot my way out.

In Portal 2, when I was trying to find my way into Alpha... I spend an hour trying to figure out where to go, only to discover the half-open door which was supposed to take me 10 seconds to find.

That actually happened to me too, except I found the door, but concluded that the other side wasn't a portal surface when it was actually a case of Hitbox Dissonance.

Also, Birth By Sleep... try Lingering Sentiment with a normal-level character. I fucking dare you.

Got destroyed in three seconds.

Err, what's "normal level"?

Actually, if you get lucky & land 2 Tornadoes on him with Ventus without getting killed, you've pretty much won. He also frequently forgets to run around those rock pillars, so you can get him by spamming Strike Raid.

Now try the Mysterious Figure, & prepare to get mad.

Playing Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow on the Xbox, I spent weeks stuck at a certain area in which I'd try to lure enemies towards me while I pop them in the fucking head (yay for obscure internet references) which would always end in me running out of ammo and shortly after bodily fluids that aren't splattered all over the floor. Turns out that if simply kept walking through the area, I'd have found every enemy standing in the most convenient spot possible for a quick melee stealth kill.

I wasn't the brightest kid in the world at age 13.

Resident Evil 4.

I ran out of ammo while fighting the first zombie in the game.  Yes, you read that right.  Mr. "Sir, are you ok?" who comes at Leon with an axe and is his first clue that something is very wrong in the village.

Dude, say what you want about Lingering Sentiment, No Heart is truly a beast of a boss.
Mockery of ideas you don't comprehend or understand is the surest mark of unintelligence.

No Heart was cool to watch, but the Mysterious Figure is goddamn ridiculous. Scattering your commands, using your best moves, firing fucking lasers, ripping off Heartless Angel, & attacking you with dual sword combos isn't enough? I'll clone myself & do it all AT THE SAME TIME!

There is a reason I prefer action/adventure games and puzzle games over FPS's.

Haha, yes, this. Here is Tai, who lost to the Parasite Queen in Metroid Prime. >w>

Probably my best fails are how in Space Marine, I consistently forget about the squig-bombs. I'll be hosing down a wave of orks, and along wanders a squig... right as I'm trying to reload.

Forgetting about the "dive" action doesn't help in this situation.

Actually, my #1 Repeated Gamer Failure was when I was about three years old. I was a little kid, so you can't exactly blame me for this, but whatever. It was when I first discovered Sid Meier's Civilization (yes, the first one). Whenever I set up the game, I would always pick the title of some royalty, like King or Prince... whatever I felt like at the time. Only one little problem: That was the Difficulty Selection Screen. I assure non-players, it's not an easy one. It took until much later in life to learn there was more to the game than being repeatedly raped by neighboring civilizations.

And I do mean repeated. The fact that games would last me appx. 50 turns, max, meant that I played that way about 5 times per session and I played almost daily. I saw the death screen more times than an average player of Contra.
