Title: Washington on track to legalize gay marriage

Quote
As lawmakers held their first public hearing on legalizing same-sex marriage, a previously undecided Democratic senator on Monday announced her support for the measure, all but ensuring that Washington will become the seventh state to allow gay and lesbian couples to get married.

The announcement by Sen. Mary Margaret Haugen, D-Camano Island, that she would cast the 25th and deciding vote in favor of the issue came as hundreds of people filled the Capitol to advocate for and against gay marriage.

7 down, 43 to go.

So who do you think will be next? Oregon? Maryland?

Oregon. They're so progressive I'm honestly surprised they weren't the first.

For my sake, I hope Oregon's next... but hey, I won't mind moving to WA to get my equal rights.

Did California ever get sorted out or are they still in the betting pool?

Their opponents will likely push for a referendum to overturn this, just like with the everything-but-marriage bill in 2009.

For my sake, I hope Oregon's next... but hey, I won't mind moving to WA to get my equal rights.

Come anyway.

Am I the only one who saw the title, and interpreted "Washington" to mean "DC" and thought "Wait wait wait...its actually going up to Capitol Hill?  SAY WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAT?"

You're not the only one.  So, yeah, good news, but not as good as I'd hoped.

A couple of weeks ago, when said holdout senator changed her mind, I saw an interview with her on some news program. I don't remember the exact details, but she had a nice little explanation for her decision. The essence of it, as I recall, was that she had been thinking about her kids and grandkids and realized that she would love them whether they were gay or not, and that it only made sense for her to help other parents let their children be happy. Gay or not.

Very good news to hear, although I'm sure those who live in the eastern part of the state will do their best to fight it.  While the remaining liberal/progressive states will probably make gay marriage legal(or at the very least civil unions), I feel it will be a long time before the same is true on a national level.  Luckily the acceptance for gays/gay marriage is growing, but there is still a long way to go.  My family is pretty socially conservative, and they can't realize how I can be straight and pro-gay marriage(my parents are at least okay with civil unions though).

Unless the Supreme Court rules in our favor.

Tell them about Loving v Virginia (or is it the other way around?), the ruling that made interracial marriage legal in all 50 states and how many conservatives used the same arguments then that they're doing now.

I have, they claim that that ban was unconstitutional as it limited the amount of people of the opposite sex one could marry.  They claim that marriage has always been between one man and one woman, and that all the instances I bring up of it not being true don't count.  My family, and those on my mom's side, are Catholic while my dad's side are United Church of Christ(yet they hold conservative views), so I try to limit bringing examples from the Bible into the argument.  They don't consider interfaith(which they are also against), intrafaith, and interracial marriages being acceptable, or polygamous and child marriages no longer being acceptable as the definition changing.

I've also told them (my parents)that if gay marriage lessens the value of their marriage that they need to see a marriage therapist.

In addition to not wanting to "change the definition of marriage", some also are against it because they think one chooses to be gay, or else those ex-gay groups wouldn't exist.  :o  I wish I thought of this at the time, but a comeback to that would be: "If Christianity were the true religion, then people wouldn't leave it."

It amuses me to see the conservatives fight this losing battle.  The change is in the wind and pretty soon we will have acceptance of gay marriage.  The only question is when.

Ironbite-I hope within my lifetime.

As Oregon's my home state... it's likely going to be here, yeah.

*waves a 'Go Washington!' flag too*

Word.

You see, the Cascades serve many purposes. In addition to (mostly) splitting up the Democrats and Republicans, they also serve to keep our local football rivalry from getting too intense. Everybody east of the Cascades is a Cougar. Everybody west is a Husky. Now, which half is in favor of gay marriage?

Ibby? My dad's a Duck.

... and my uncle's a Beaver.  I can't cheer for either side without getting glared at, so I just tend to bring them both beers and hole up in my room when I'm over here in Oregon.

There were talks in Maryland last year. They kind of stalled. They were supposed to be bringing that issue out later on this year, but methinks since this is an election year, they may get put off for another season. I guess we'll see. Frankly, I wouldn't mind if my state was part would revisit it. Maybe I could do more than letter writing this time.

If not then congratulations!

There's a good chance of it. The domestic partnership bill passed with only 52% support.

Sorry to sour news, but NOM has pledge to put 250K into fighting equality. If they can get 120,577 signature before June 6, that means there will be no marriages and a referendum will be put into vote during the November ballots.

Yeah I really hope this fails.  I hate this "will of the people" shit that goes one when Conservatives don't get their way.

Ironbite-it's really annoying.

Hey, I got an idea; let's go back to the 1960s and let's do a "will of the people" to repeal the Civil Rights Act. After all, I'm sure you could easily get several hundred thousand signatures, perhaps more, that black people don't deserve equal rights under the Constitution! Voice of the People! Voice of the People! Voice of...

...nobody?

Oh that's right... it's fucking stupid. A majority of Spanish people wanted to plunder the natives of Central and South America for gold. Doesn't make it right. The majority of Americans wanted to take the land from the Native Americans who lived there. Didn't make that right, either. The majority of people in the south U.S. wanted to keep their slaves before the Civil War. That still doesn't make it right.

Sorry conservatives, we're going to hold this nation to its highest ideal: that ALL are created equal... whether you want to or not.

It seems Washington has now approved (http://www.cnn.com/2012/02/08/us/washington-same-sex-marriage/index.html) same sex marriage. Now we'll just have to wait until NOM has their hissy fit and we'll see how things settle.
