OK, wait. I think there are two different ways to read the last line in the comic which are leading to disagreement. The way I interpreted it at first, "why do you need to say it?" means "why would you even need to use the word at all?". Presumably this is what UP saw when he posted it.

The other way to read it, "it" means "the point". I.e. "Why do are you making that point out loud?". I'm guessing this is how Fred read it.

Either of you correct me if I'm wrong.

The first point, while valid in many circumstances, ignores the fact that the word can be used, in the right context, in a non-offensive manner.  For example, we could be talking about pre-Civil Rights Movement America, and how white men didn't want their daughters dating a "dirty nigger."  Does that word, specifically, need to be used?  No, but it can be use to highlight the deep-seeded racism of certain eras, people, and ideas.  It may not be the best idea, but it works, and to be offended by it, in that context, typically means that you really haven't been paying attention at all to what the other person has been saying.

When it comes to bigotry/bigots, I'm of the Mel Brooks school of thought.

I remember I once actually used the word in a college paper. Granted, it was analysis of a play where a character would use it to refer to members of his family (wish I could remember the title. It was about a former slave family and the piano they somehow got from their former owners), so it was in the context of analyzing the character, not in any offensive context.

You're quite right.

It's an interesting case of seeing things the way we want to, actually.

So much. I was talking with some people in the program I'm in who mentioned about ebola, and I told them not worry, as it is only contagious for a very short time before symptoms show, as long as you don't fuck someone who's bleeding from their eyes or play around in puddles of blood, you should probably be fine. And they started freaking out, and one even said they thought it could be airborne because of some nurses who were taking care of the guy who had itgetting it, to which I responded, yeah, they're around him all the time, its way more easy for them to get it than someone else.
