(CBS/AP) Ernest Borgnine, the beefy screen star known for blustery, often villainous roles, but who won the Best Actor Oscar for playing against type as a lovesick butcher in "Marty" in 1955, died Sunday. He was 95.
His longtime spokesman, Harry Flynn, told The Associated Press that Borgnine died of renal failure at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center with his family by his side.
He did not have the face, or the smile, of a classic movie star. But Borgnine certainly had the heart of one, whether in a drama, such as "Marty," or a comedy, like the 1960s sitcom "McHale's Navy."
.....................
Younger viewers might know him more as the voice of Mermaid Man in "Spongebob Squarepants."

RIP Ernest, you were a great actor. BTW, did anyone else know that he was married to Tova, if you do who she is, she's on QVC every so often selling cosmetics.I always found it weird for some reason.

Hmmm how many great movies have I seen him in? Escape from New York, The Wild bunch, Ice station Zebra, Convoy, The Dirty dozen and Red (I was actually suprised when I saw him in that, I thought he was alreade dead by then.). So many good movies. And also Small soldiers and Blueberry and some other not so good movies...
Great actor with a long and glorious career.

I will always remember him as the Lion from the 1985 Alice in Wonderland TV special with Natalie Gregory. Just ‘cause I watched that so often.
