Romans were pretty racist, too.

Would I be wrong in assuming that most nations of the Greek and Roman time periods were racist?

Racism is about 500 years old. It's quite an enlightenment concept, actually. Read some Theodore W. Allen.

You mean the guy who wrote the book "The Invention of the White Race"? The same guy who doesn't look further before the Antebellum era? The same guy who isn't an anthropologist? The same guy who isn't an archaeologist? The same guy with no education concerning the time before the Revolutionary War?

He was a writer by trade. He had no formal education in the topics that matter. So no, you don't have any academic support for your position.

The book starts in 1600. If you don't like his lack of formal education- fair enough- there are plenty who do not. W. E .B. Du Bois, for instance, did not lack for education. Joseph Pugliese researches this sort of thing in the Australian context. Winthrop Jordan is another.

I do.  Racism has been around FOR ALL OF HISTORY!  As long as people can look at people who look different then their group and say they hate them for their differences, there has been racism.

Ironbite-how that didn't penetrate your skull surprises me but then I remember who I'm talking to.

Needless to say, my position has far more academic support than yours. Read a book.

I find that 99% of the time, when someone says something doesn't need to be said, but says it anyway, they know they're on shaky ground at best. I find the same thing applies when people cite "common sense".

And no, this isn't a refutation or argument against your inane sputtering about "REAL racism". Just something I found interesting.

If you want me to make an argument, I'll make an argument. Ironbite's personal insults do not deserve anything of the sort.

Here's my question to you, Fred.

What have you done to earn our respect?

Well isn't THAT a loaded question. What have you done to earn mine?

You're the one demanding that we automatically respect what you have to say.

Also, I asked first.

OH CAN I ANSWER!?

No.

Then fuck you dragon boy!

It's not fair to the other contestants when you already know the answer :P

Actually racism has only been around since 1936. Perhaps you are thinking of racialism which is much older. It started way back in 1907.

Of course, if you want to ignore specific words and just look at the whole "us vs. them (those dirty unwashed savages)" concept I'm sure i could find quite a few quotes from the bible which was written a good deal more than 500 years ago.

Generally when we say racism has been around since the beginning of time we aren't talking about the word, but the concept.

As is the case when people generally use words, period.

A flat out lie.

Then stop thinking that you're above citing what you're saying or else shut up.

Interesting point: The idea of a 'White' Race (or any 'Race') is fairly recent. The internecine strife between, for instance, the ancient israelites and the Caananites for instance would have fit the idea of ethnic cleansing but they would never have thought to be the one 'Semitic' race.

The idea of 'race' as a unifying, or universal, set ot traits was not a concept. If anything religion was probably a concept first. Hence the idea of 'Christendom'.

Generally when we say racism has been around since the beginning of time we aren't talking about the word, but the concept.

Bigotry is human, absolutely. Xenophobia is inherent, sure. Racism is a much more specific type of bigotry than just xenophobia- racism hatred of a person because of the colour of their skin alone and not as a signifier of nationality. The Romans discriminated against white foreigners and black foreigners equally. If you were born in Rome and you were black, you were a full citizen. Hatred of people because of their "race" is about 500 years old, about as old as racialised slavery and new-world colonialism.
