No my point was more that simply being born in Rome wasn't enough. You had to be the child of a Roman Citizen to get the citizenship. Indeed as the empire expanded actually being born in Rome was neither necessary nor sufficient. Plenty of Emperors were never born in Rome.

Part of that effectively meant though that there weren't 'black' romans as even if they were born in Rome they were not citizens. But then as more people were granted Citizenship and slaves were freed and became citizens the racial construct of the 'Roman Citizen' did change.

The whole idea particularly when considerd with the Romans and the Italians is very interesting. I mean they fought the 'Social War' to prevent enfranchising the rest of Italy. But when the Italians were offered assistance by Mithridates (and others) they spurned that help as they did feel a greater identity with the Romans than the Seulucids.

Once again though it was a social/linguistic identity rather than a 'white'/ 'other colour' identity.

Yep, some things never DO change...

Our political cartoonists haven't gotten much more imaginative since then.  I swear I've seen a political cartoon similar to that sometime in the past couple of years, only for a modern issue.
