Don't feel like making a new topic, so I'll post a conversation I had with with Conservatoons on DeviantArt.

Me: So what's your opinion on Edward Snowden?

Conservatoons: Very low.  He did not go thru proper channels.  He went to foreign press and seeks asylum in enemy states.

Me: Do you think he has any information that would be severely detrimental to the Obama administration?

Conservatoons: Doesn't matter.  Media have lied for him from the beginning.  They will continue to do so because his socialist policies are in line w/ the medias desire to turn us into a gender neutral, socialist utopia managed by our betters.   Also to expose him would be to admit they too lied or that they are dupes.    If Snowden pulled this stunt w/ a Repub in office it would be the ongoing daily crisis and embarrassment - which it is.  Not to mention dangerous and a terrible precedent.

Me: Even then, it was that incident that Obama's approval rating took a hit, both domestically as well as outside. By contrast, what is your opinion of the NSA nowadays on their conduct?

Conservatoons: The dirty secret is that the NSA have be doing it for 30 yrs or more.  Correctly run most people have little to worry.   NSA sucks up everything, looks for anomalies.  You really have to be a standout among trillions of msgs to get the attn of the supercomputer. IMO the danger is that only recently have these agencies been so abused - with  citizens, companies, associations and organizations being specifically targeted.

Me: Yeah, it's ridiculous what the NSA is wasting its resources on, like World of Warcraft and other MMORPGs, unless terrorists are using those or the NSA employees are simply bored (most likely). Your comment "Correctly run most people have little to worry" ironically worries me. Don't people say the same thing about background checks?

Conservatoons: Good pt. My main pt. w/ NSA is that their prob is too much data.    It seems that a very focused look at anyone or anything would/should be the exception unless someone in govt orders it.  And there is prob a record of that.

KZN02: Looking at your work, you don't seem to have much on Snowden or the NSA (save for bin Laden death and another cartoon). You don't find those worth drawing about?

Conservatoons: No.  It is too in the weeds for most.

Now that I look back, does it look like I'm secretly an NSA agent trying to catch him saying something bad about the NSA or something?

Eh... not really.  Not to me anyway.  It would depend on how paranoid a person was about it though.

I've been asked if I was everything from a cop to the CIA. 

I just like asking questions (they weren't even that probing, at least I didn't think so).  Inquiring minds want to know, and all that.

If you don't join the army then you have are a failure and you should kill yourself.

I find this particularly amusing since I was in the military (though Navy, not army) and if anything it helped make me even MORE liberal then I was originally.

Though the military as an institution can be quite conservative, I don't think all of it's members are as much as the cartoonist assumes.

And haven't we had generals testifying before congress we needed better gun control laws and that climate change could become a security issue?

So even as an institution, it has some Liberal kinks.

Yes, regardless of the trope that the military is this stuck up conservative hole, it really isn't. Not compared to a lot of things. It's kind of a tradition considering the fact that the military was actually relatively quick when it came to minorities and women serving (which includes various rights they weren't given outside of the military).

Military history is rather fascinating, tbh.
