It's what I learned in history class years ago. So, either the textbook was wrong, or the etymologists have other theories. The spelling seems a little too coinky-dinky, regardless, especially considering the centuries-long tradition of diamond and other gemstone transport, import, stone cutting and setting, especially amongst Hasidim and Sephardic Jews.

Consider also that it might be the other way around; Hebrews or Israelites getting tagged with what is otherwise a seemingly non sequitur sounding name of "Jew", from their association with jewels?

The Medieval British nobility spoke French so a lot of the words in modern English that refer to things that used to be connected to the nobility's lifestyle are derived from that language. That's why the other explanation sounds more credible to me but I'm no etymologist either. It's pretty common to have similar sounding words that mean completely different things and have evolved from different root words. I can also say that history textbooks can be and have been wrong: when years have gone by I remember having found out about minor mistakes with things I was taught but can't really recall any specific examples.

I'm not going to start debating about such a minor issue I can mostly just speculate about, though. Both explanations are possible, I just find one more credible than the other.
