Title: Tropes You Hate (aka The Pet Peeve Tropes Thread)
Post by: Alehksunos on January 26, 2013, 01:03:05 am
An introduction to the term "Pet Peeve Trope" (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/PetPeeveTrope)

(Yes, more wankery of TV Tropes, still a pretty cool site with a pretty horrible community. I'm saying this because most of you has had enough of this site. I can remember one person on a forum having a signature banner saying "Anti-YTMND," and the funny thing is nobody cares about YTMND anymore now.)

Anyway, I still want to share the many tropes in a work that is so done to death, so vile, or so stupid, that they can all die in a fire.

While these are all the ones I can think of, here's some of my picks, all whom I have a bone to pick with (according to their names on the site):
There. That's all the tropes I really don't like (again, all that I could think of), often some of them turning me off from a work completely.

Fauxlosophic Narration.

I loved Heroes & Desperate Housewives, but I couldn't stand those bullshit pretentious speeches they both had at the beginning.

I think you got most of mine...

Oh, Technobabble is a big one of mine. Fuck that noise.

Future Fantasy trying to pretend to be science fiction by failing science forever doesn't help you create an engaging narrative.

Every Car is a Pinto.

It may look cool, but it's also convinced tons of people that cars are at a risk of randomly exploding in any crash and inspiring them to run into traffic to try and escape. Or roughly pull injured people out of cars (and again, possibly into traffic) to "save" them.

You don't like the everybody laughs ending? But...Harvey Birdman used it so well!

...And what do you have against noodle people? Rolo Lamperouge is quite cute thank you very much

/Deliberately being a devils advocate.

The only thing I have against "noodle people" is that I just plain hate "Lazy Artist" tropes.

And one thing I remembered, which annoys the hell out of me: Hands In Pockets (Not bothering to draw hands, feet, ears, etc.).

(I apologize if I'm starting to sound like John Kricfalusi. I love that guy's works and all, but Jesus Christ, is he a snooty cartoonist.)

I have to say I'm not to thrilled with the portrayal of mid-westerners/farmers/southerners in a fair amount of films.  Then again, I just got done watching "To Wong Foo, Thanks For Everything."  To be fair, you could argue that the characters redeem themselves in the end, but just the fucking stereotypical behavior of a decent segment of the town they're in...bothers me.

Then again, the film is set in Nebraska, so I guess I'm just kinda pissed by the idea of people in my state being portrayed as fucking backwater hicks - even in the smaller towns!

Yeah.  I'm not sure if there's a trope name for it or what the fuck that trope name would be, but I just realized how much if pisses me off.

Actually, any of the tropes in "Television is Trying to Kill You" apply to this. More than one person has suffered injury or even death (or allowed someone to suffer it/caused it themselves) through following logic that they saw in fiction.

Take Grievous Bottley Harm, for example. No, you can't just casually smash a beer bottle over someone's head and knock them out. You can't "harmlessly" knock someone out anyway, but a glass bottle will probably just cave their skull in and now you're facing a murder charge. Zombie Go Boom tested a champagne bottle a few weeks ago, and the FIRST strike caused a bloody skull fracture.

"Rape is OK when it's Female on Male" and "Rape is OK when it's Female on Female" annoy me to no end, since they're still so common in comedies.

Most of the tropes on this page suck: http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/DoubleStandard

The obligatory romance sub-plot in everything shits me to no end.

In a similar vein, "Abuse is funny when it's female on male"

It's also ridiculously popular in anime and is one of the biggest complaints I have about the genre as a whole.

Higurashi is an exception, but that's a horror genre anime.

They are getting better with it although that bugged me with p4 (the camp sequeence had Chie and Yukikko kick Yosuke Yu and Kanji into a rock face) then in Golden therere are electric sparks

I hate comedy movies where fat, sloppy men are praised for being "true men", and then there are a ton of fat girl jokes and objectification of skinny women in the movie. Often in the same movie there will also be the "dumb fake girl" jokes. Seriously, no matter what a girl does she can't win in these movies. If she's fat or doesn't dress up, she's a "whale" or "ugly dyke". If she's thin she's joked about being anorexic, or a typical woman. If she wears a lot of makeup she's a dumb whore, and will get crude jokes about her body(Like loose vagina jokes, anal sex jokes, blow job jokes, etc).
Even the "good girls" get jokes. Either they're quiet, young, have no point in the movie other than being the main character's love, or they're joked about as being "prude" or a "typical woman".

I also hear a lot of jokes about how "stupid" or "silly' mental disorders and victims reactions to violence are. Like when people hear stories about someone hearing voices(schizophrenia) a lot of times you will hear someone say "Wow what an idiot, I think they just confused their thoughts with real voices", or "I don't understand why women freeze up while getting raped. I'd just [insert stupid act here]! Then no one would rape me."

Also the "boys will be boys" stuff. That kinda goes with the first one.

Both the Princesses Prefer Pink (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/PrincessesPreferPink) and the Damsel In Distress (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/DamselInDistress) tropes. I prefer my princesses to be badasses (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/BadassPrincess).

What about the badass damsel like this   (http://images1.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20121027235112/swordartonline/images/thumb/b/b2/Asuna_Queen_Titania.png/305px-Asuna_Queen_Titania.png)

Badass Damsel is part of the badass princess trope, or very similar, so I have no problem. One could say both Princress Leia, and her mother Padme are good examples of badass damsels. Both are used as examples, and I have say the scene from AOTC where Padme gets out her handcuffs first has to be one of my favorite scenes from the prequels, she's like "Fuck that shit, I'm outta here. You two can continue to hang around if you like to."

Other than stupid teenage romantic comedies, I can't seem to think of anything that would fit that mold.

Agreed.  Very few shows do it well.  But most of the time it just leads to Flanderization, another trope I despise.

-Hollywood pudgy is another one that ticks me off.  99% of the time, the actresses they say are getting fat are completely average weight.  Way to encourage females with body issues.

-Glurge can go to hell.  I get enough of that with religion, I don't need it plauging entertainment.

-"Not so different" can be done well, but there are times when it just comes across as preachy, trying to paint every day humans as no different from the worst monsters in history (another reason I despise religion).

-Last but not least, all of the "true art" tropes.

 -Fanon Discontinuity

Seriously, I get that you didn't like sequel X or something but sometimes it turns into really childish whining. "Oh, I didn't like Highlander 2 or Star trek N or whatever so I will pretend that it never happened and this makes me a better fan."

Although in Highlander 2's case even the creators acknowledge Zeist never happened

The one I hate the most is Idiot Plot (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/IdiotPlot).  A story in which the only way to maintain the conflict is to have all the characters be complete morons.  Has a cousin, the Idiot Ball (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/IdiotBall), in which the conflict is instigated or maintained because a single character conveniently does something breathtakingly stupid.  Generally these cover almost all the moments that make you scream at the screen, "WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT?!"

Redshirt Army:  The reason I gave up on Primeval was because they had lots of soldiers who were only there to be eaten/squished each week.  If the other soldiers seemed upset, you had Cutter looking at them like they'd failed somehow.  But it's only a tragedy if one of the main characters gets hurt or killed.

And Misaimed Hatedom:  Look at what happened when Blaze Bailey became lead singer of Iron Maiden or Annette Olzon became lad singer of Nightwish.  In both cases, the events that transpired that allowed them to become lead singer had nothing to do with them, took place long before they joined and were not their fault.  In both cases, they were on the receiving end of tirades of abuse (there are youtube vids of Annette Olzon leaving the stage in tears because of the abuse) and yet neither had done anything to be on the receiving end.  And in both cases, the rest of the respective bands seem to have escaped the abuse.
