The whole county is shut down for a hypothermia warning, yet the jackass who owns the convenience store up the street is making his employees come to work.

The town of Villa Rica in Georgia is being utterly ridiculous with paranoia: the local schools are trying to hold their kids overnight because it's apparently too dangerous to drive them home.

There's barely even any snow or ice on the roads. We drove in worse conditions in 2012 on vacation with no snow tires or any special preparation beyond "Acknowledge that you are driving in the snow." But even the parents are refusing to drive 5 miles to pick up their kids (or even walk a few miles to escort them home on the sidewalks), and some employees at the certification partner of my company were refusing to go into work because of the snow.

I've seen the town today. The roads were cleared ages ago and there's a thin layer of snow on the stuff. It's hardly a blizzard or snowdrifts.

Oh for crying out loud... How cold did you say it was? Because if it's warmer than the surface of Mars I'm going to laugh and cry at the same time. I was out and about today in -5 weather, and Most of the people I saw outside were wearing jeans and a sweatshirt. (It helps that the wind died down, but still.) There's also enough snow in drifts (not man-made piles, mind you, snowdrifts) to reach the waistband of my pants. Georgia needs to get its shit together.

By the way, the "Earth is colder than the surface of Mars!" thing is an exaggeration. Mars has a thin atmosphere and temperature tends to vary wildly; only the specific spot the rover was sitting had its temperature taken, and it could have been a dozen degrees colder in a spot close enough to be visible in its photographs.

I know, it was intentional hyperbole. I had planned to say "the surface of Pluto" but with the "Canada/Russia is colder than Mars!" meme going around I thought "Mars" would be funnier.

It is officially -17 F in town and I can see the shadow of the current shift's worker from my window. Seriously, when do you say "enough is enough" and show some god damned compassion? It's not like the Kroger's a block and a half down the street isn't open in case someone has an emergency.

...Like my currently frozen pipes. Glad I filled up the water jugs when I did.

The weather where I live is cold but will warm up temporarily before getting cold again.  It can snow and sleet here, but things really slow down around here when an inch of wintry precipitation falls and collects.

What can be really annoying about this to me is that if there is a very dramatic drop in temperature, my old joint injury will hurt.

Also annoying to me, since I talked about this in another thread, are people who claim military prestige when they never earned it.  These people manage to manipulate their way into political office, lucrative business contracts, Veterans Administration benefits, and more.  This problem is a pet peeve of mine.

That I had to call to get a Medicaid benefit card, because apparently I was supposed to keep my old one for 10 years when it wasn't being used, and had no way of knowing that I was going to be back on the plan. The real kicker is that they kicked me off if the last time because I made a few dollars too much. Assholes...

Basically, yeah. I pissed him off (don't remember how or why), he knocked me over, I kicked at him, he grabbed my ankle and yanked like he was going to HULK SMASH me against the wall. My ACL gave out before he could pick me up and my screaming got my mom's attention. At first they assumed I was faking, but when the swelling and discoloration hadn't gone down after a day or so, my mom brought me into urgent care and told everyone that I'd been trying to sled down a backyard hill standing up. Nothing ever happened to my dad and he seems to honesty believe I injured myself doing something stupid.

So yeah. Touchy subject.
