Welp, cue the religious folks in the US ranting the godlessness of Communism or something.
What is, is not; what is not, is.

Banning religion?  I thought they'd moved past hardline Communism.  This is a human rights violation, plain and simple.

Even if it is a human rights violation, this is so fascinating. I want to see where it'd go. What kind of effect it'll have.

This...this abandonment of the past is just incredible.

A world without tradition, without laws coming from old times, without suspicions derived of past ages...that is a kind of world I'd like to live in, if only for curiosity's sake.

I endorse it, if only on the level of scientific curiosity.

Because, as I stated, I want to know what a world without a past, without tradition, would be like.

I believe that's the purpose of Nihilism.  I still find it quite distasteful.
And when we're done soul searching,
And we carry the weight and die for a cause.
Is misery made beautiful
Right before our eyes.

Mercy be revealed, or blind us where we stand?

The problem I see with this is it's FORCED skepticism of religion than actual skepticism of it.  That's not a positive movement in any direction if you're forced against your will to do so.

I don't find nihilism too distasteful, if "the world lacks a past" is what it is.

We've had far too much trouble with the meager old "its tradition" excuse, for why things are bad.

The "we believe this way" excuse for why things are bad.

The "We Did Things This Way In The Past" excuse...

And lets not forget the racists and their little pride in their nationality.

EVERYTHING that has made people miserable is an old idea, an old ideal of capitalism having to be this way or that way, or its communism, a fear ages old, that should not be relevant. OLD! Its always old things!

Uh...not really, considering the Cultural Revolution and especially the Destruction of the Four Olds.

Yeah, I think China is trying to go back to the "Cultural Revolution" mindset. It had been drifting away from it for a while still maintaining strict censorship of dissenting views.

There are limits. Leaving religion is great when it's consensual. It isn't so good when it is forced. Do we not all agree that criminalizing certain thoughts is a bad idea? There's a good reason why crimes in the US require BOTH a criminal act (Actus Reus) and a criminal intent (Mens Rea). I do hope China realizes what can of worms it's about to open, and I hope they'll be able to close it again when they realize the unintended consequences of their actions.
