The Dutch government has unveiled the draft of a law that would give police investigating online crimes the right to hack into computers in the Netherlands or abroad and install spyware or destroy files.

So... yeah. Supposedly this will require judicial oversight, but I don't imagine that they'll allow civilians equal access to Dutch government computers...

Well, fuck. I guess I'll have to get rid of those compromising pictures of the Queen, then.

I would say something more relevant, but I think "well, fuck" about covers it.

I'd be fine with simply hacking to find certain files (as long as they have a warrant for it). But installing Spyware? That's just going to far.

Wouldn't the other countries have something to say about that?  I can't imagine they'd be amused by this.

While it appears to state that they could also do it "abroad", that will never fly. At a minimum, being caught hacking into a foreign computer will cause a political shitstorm. It'll probably end up resulting in legal consequences.

So the Dutch government wants to give itself the power to do what private companies have been doing ever since the Internet became a thing.

*yawn*
