Title: Futurama Wasn't Kidding
Post by: Damen on April 05, 2012, 11:53:51 pm
Remember that episode of Futurama that gave us a glimpse of the eyePhone (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Attack_of_the_Killer_App)? Well, it turns out the guys at Google saw it and went "Hmm." So now we've got...Project Glass.

Yeah, kids, that's right. No longer will you be required to actually reach into your pocket if you want to hop on the web, after all, that can take away from valuable surfing time and may even burn calories. Now you can have the wonder if the internet right on your face (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/04/04/project-glass-google_n_1403174.html).

Excuse me, I feel my paranoia setting in.

Trying to converse with someone who's busy texting is bad enough (not even going to touch Facebook mobile). Once this takes off, I'm going to start ripping them off peoples' heads if they're using them to browse Youtube while I'm trying to talk to them.

There's a point where it gets to be too much; what happened to simple human interaction?*

*says the guy on an internet forum... >_>

Human interaction is highly overrated. I for one welcome the day in which all social contact is outsourced to the machines.

Now all that's left is to implant devices in your head that let you surf the internet with your brain while overlaying the UI on top of your field of vision.

I shall eagerly anticipate that day.

Fixed your post a bit.

Can you imagine playing Elder Scrolls 7 with your mind?

I took it a step farther.  I saw them as real life Dragonball Z Scouters - (http://www.rubberslug.com/user/6258568a8d804292a8d932d5f4e4ded2/236101-3059152-VegetaScouter01.jpg)

Really, this is just taking what already exists to the next level. As time goes on, technologies like this will become more seamlessly part of life.

I mean, think about it. Imagine being able to just look at a store you're passing and a personal HUD pops up giving ratings, highlight items of interest to you that they carry (from a list you program yourself, such as hobby items, favorite foods, etc), comparative pricing with other nearby stores and online retailers, and all the other information you could want.

And honestly, I'd say systems like this would increase activity for the net-dependent, not decrease it. Right now, going out means you're not connected as well. You have to interrupt real conversations or stop what you're doing to fiddle with a phone. If all that accessibility is bled into your other actions, you can do things like go for a walk while still surfing the web and chatting with online friends. You're not having to sacrifice one thing to do another.

There's still quite a ways to go before things are that seamless, but we should be encouraging the progress, not decrying it as tools for the exceptionally lazy.

I'm thinking about the practical dangers of it, like distracting people when they walk. And I'm also concern with environmental implications such as waste. What happens if these glasses replace cellphones? How will we properly handle such a large amount of waste from the replaced phones? I'm glad that technology marches on, but I think we should also make transition to new technology as smooth and friendly as possible.
/somewhat topical rant

Personally, I think I'm satisfied with my level of connection.

We already throw out large amounts of phones every time a new one comes out. I know a lot of people that replace their phone every few months just because they can.

I saw them as the magical retractor shades from Deus Ex Human Revolution. Because that's the first place my mind went when I read 'Augmented Reality'.

As someone who wears glasses and basically lives online, I eagerly await Hud displays on the inside of my lenses. The technology already exists it just needs to be refined into a more affordable and viable option. This device is pretty cool too. Personally I am for the full integration of technologies into our lives. While I have a somewhat naive approach to what it will be like in the future, the more likely situation is a corporate wasteland where our smallest action charged to some business while we are bombarded with adverts right into our eyes. Still I will hold out and hope for the utopia that technology makes possible.

This is what I call technologically enhanced Darwinism. Learn to break your addiction to [insert electronic device here] otherwise it will cause you to break.

I wonder how long it will take for the military to weaponize this?

Now you too can have real life scouters! It will probably cost over 9000 USD though.

It's definitely cool and all, but I can see this being abused heavily as well as some people getting even MORE addicted to the internet.

Might already exist seeing how this is the least bizarre thing DARPA has

Nice to know that R&D funding is going to stuff like this rather than solving the energy crisis, or water shortages, or neglected diseases, or repairing the USA's tattered infrastructure, or the hundreds of other much better things I could think of besides new electronic toys for the wealthy.

I'm sorry but... what? This is something developed by Google, not the government. The weaponizing and DARPA references are what are referred to as "jokes".
