Didn't they know the earth was round in ancient Greece? I don't think any scientist have denied the world as being round in a looooong time.

yes. Yes they did.  They even knew the circumference of the earth.

Guy in Egypt heard from a friend how when the sun was at it's height it shone directly down the village well.
Guy went "Wait, it doesn't do that here.  What's going on?"

and so figured out the Earth had to be a sphere.

In short, science tested for evidence and then based it's views on that evidence.
Not something religion is well known for.

I remember hearing that story! I even want to say it was on an episode of Bill Nye.

You're both right! Eratosthenes was a Greek, but he lived in Egypt.
Excuse me, sir, do you have a minute to talk about your lord and savior, Hannibal Barca?

I figured because I know one of the places involved was alexandria and the rest of the story is he paid a guy to walk from his city to where his friend lived, counting all the steps he took.

Thats how they learned how big the earth was.

Walking from greece to egypt might have been a bit impractical.

After slugging him with a dictionary.

Kinda, but it'd be better to ask him about the other laws of thermodynamics and snicker at the deer-in-the-headlights reaction.

Hell, ask him about the second and he won't tell you much either beyond perhaps stating it, if he has Wikipedia handy.

Quick experiment: Every time a creationist brings up the second law of thermodynamics, ask them to explain the equivalence between Kelvin's and Clausius' postulates*. If they cannot, demand to know how the Hell they think they are qualified to say what thermodynamics has to say about evolution.

*If you've never heard of that, look it up. The proof is really quite elegant and doesn't require much in terms of background physics knowledge.

"Does not the..."
There is something wrong with English vernacular when using proper grammar comes off as smug. That guy's smirk and phrasing make me want to give him a wedgie something fierce.

It isn't just the message, it's the presentation.
I'm in science to discover and analyze God's wonderful universe, not gripe about how people don't like God.  I believe the creation/evolution debate is a waste of Christian brains (we have them, believe it or not) that could be better spent on making actual things.

Favorite philosophers (out of the ones I've personally read): Jesus, Solomon, Marcus Aurelius, Immanuel Kant
