Err, I semi-agree with the first statement, she's not being disrepectful per-see, but she seams to be doing that thing americans do where we treat every other culture like it's all mystic and bullshit.

So not racist, just stupid and annoying.
Agreed.  Still, the answer is not to scream "appropriation".
Hey, I just discovered a legitimate version of "Cultural Appropriation".
Qué?
People thinking anything foreign like something super amazing. E.G. people getting words like "Peace" and "Love" in chinese tattooed on them.
It's not racist or offensive, but it does make you look like a major tool. ]

Okay.

Speaking of which, I heard a story about a guy who got engaged.  To celebrate, he got a tattoo that read "one love".  Or so he thought.  As it turned out, it actually said "love hurts".

I wonder if it was intentional or the guy who gave him the tattoo was bad at chinese.

If you all hadn't heard, since tattoos became more popular in China, they're now getting random English words tattooed and on t-shirts and shit.

I don't think any country has an excess of stupid.  It's just that the idiots tend to scream the loudest.

A school system funded by pocket change doesn't help though.

Is it odd that I want the "WHAT," "CONDENSATION," and "BRAKE" shirts?

I see it like this, if you are going to borrow something from another culture, be sure to understand the meaning of it.

For example, take the person who wears a T-shirt with Kaali-Mata on it.

SMART PERSON: "This is Kaali, the Surpreme Godhead in feminine form as the Lady of death, time, transformation & enlightenment. She's the benevolent, fierce but loving mother who destroys all ignorance & wickedness within & without and is the equal partner & spouse to Lord Shiva."

STUPID PERSON: "I got this shirt cuz it's like totally 'metal' with this scary blue-skinned naked demon babe!" OR "I got this Kaali shirt cuz she's the ultimate man-stomping RadFem cuz men are yucky & she kicks men's ass!" OR "I have this Kaali shirt cuz she's a SUPER-DEMON! HAIL SATAN!"

And I agree about that goofiness with writing random words in an unfamiliar language/script.

It's doubtful that most people even in their native culture know the meaning of all the artifacts they surround themselves with.

I see it like this. If someone else borrows something from another culture, I don't have to get a social justice stick up my ass about it.
Consumption is not a politically combative act — refraining from consumption even less so.
