I just have issue wit the idea of Twilight being labelled an asshole. She'd never intentionally do anything to harm or insult anypony, which I think is kind of important to that label. She can be insensitive at times, because she's not used to having friends--which is kind of the point. She's learning as she goes.
I really don't see anypony acting wrong in Swarm of the Century. Seriously think about it.
Say you are a farmer. There are a swarm of locusts coming to eat your crops. You begin to collect people and start rounding up bug killers, bug zappers - anything that could possibly get at the locusts.
Then Bob bursts in.
"I hear you all got some locusts!" he says, his voice loud yet measured.
"That's right, Bob," you say, cocking an eyebrow.
"All right, who here has a trombone?" Bob asks.
"Why?" you ask.
"How else are we going to start a band?" he asks in return, his hands on his hips. Seeing no reaction from you, Bob storms out, mummbling something about a kazoo.
Pinkie Pie spent the entire time barely trying to explain herself. She just
assumed the other characters knew wht she was doing. We, as the viewer, knew what she was doing was likely helpful, due to tropes. But how was
anypony supposed to know that the one pony who seemed to be doing nothing was doing something very important.
Communication and understanding is a two-way street, and Miss Pie is not the world's best communicator beyond broad ideas. I love that pony, but to call anypony a jerk for considering her too... random, at that point in the show, to be helpful, is disingenuous.
And once again to Lesson Zero... once again, she was the grips of a mental breakdown. Twilight is high strung, but well-meaning. Did she act like a jerk? Yes. And it took a break with reality to do it.
