Title: Election 2012 Thread
Post by: Rabbit of Caerbannog on November 04, 2012, 05:43:59 pm
(http://images.politico.com/global/2012/04/120405_obama_romney.jpg)

This thread will be for our personal predictions for the 2012 election as well as election news coverage. Bear in mind that the poll is for who you think will win, not who you want to win. Once the voting begins on Tuesday we can start posting news about the electoral votes here.

To start things off, here's some news (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/11/03/2012-early-voting-_n_2068881.html) concerning who has the lead among early voters.

Obama defiantly has the electoral advantage.  He can lose a few of the toss up states he leads in while Romney must realistically must win almost all the tossups.

Why the fuck did I read the comments on that link that Rabbit gave?? Seriously,"Gangbangers" in the whitehouse?? That being said, I think Obama will win, but when that is all said and done, I really don't care who wins. If Rommey wins good for him, I'll survive, after all I managed to do so for 8 years under Bush Jr.

I'll be honest. If Barack Obama wins, I'll be real excited, mainly because I'll get to sip on all those tasty Consie tears bawled from the GOP.

(click to show/hide)

If Mitt Romney wins (which is fairly likely), then fuck everything. People will get pissed off no matter what happens. Then again, I live in a state where my governor aides the state's Right to Life organization and the defunding of Planned Parenthood (and I can't stand him).

The presidency will remain Democratic; the natural inertia of the average voter will lead them to back the incumbent all else being equal. Bush 1 lost cause of the It's Time factor and Carter lost because of the October Surprise. Ford lost because he was an idiot and also Watergate.

What matters are the down ticket races. It looks like the Republicans are going to keep control of the house and senate, and only a few Turncoat Democrats are going to burn. So the formula remains the same: Republicans can do what they want, Democrats can't do anything at all and therefore the Reds can wait it out until they get back the White House. Just wave the Freak Flag high until the inevitable.

Which if the Dems grew some balls could change the first day of the new Senate.  Of course it would not matter much because the GOP will still have control of the House.

Filibusters have their place, as they allow the minority some (in theory) small level of control. If they worked the way many people think they worked*, they would be great. Sadly, that kind of filibuster went out long ago and will never come back because it takes too much effort

*By that I mean forcing someone to stand there and continue to speak until they either relinquish the floor or a vote is taken to end debate.

It's happened a lot lately, and I wouldn't be surprised if it's happened in the past with Halloween and Election Day being so close together. I remember in 2008 there was a lady who would ask trick-or-treaters who their parents were voting for, and would refuse to give candy if they said "Obama".

I don't remember it being this bad 4 years ago.  Sure there was a lot of, "Obama is a Muslim," but that was about it.  Maybe now it's because people can point to some numbers and say, "See, where's your 'Change' now?"

Personally, all I have to do is point to my company's stock and profits and say, "Right there!"

Because I wanna be in the company of fellow electionistas, I'm popping my head in for a lil' while (I know, I'm surprised I wasn't eaten by ManBearChupaAngelCabras also). All legitimate polls are pointing to Obama but I'm massively worried about the obscene levels of voter fraud in Ohio (which has gotten so bad I practically feel they should just "give" the state to Obama as a punishment), Pennsylvania and Florida.

Vyper, you're not from California right? It was pretty ugly 4 years ago - not as ugly as it's gotten but it was pretty bad. Though that might be because of the confluence of Prop 8 (gimmie 3 cheers for the Reverse Trojan Horse Proposition) nonsense

I think Obama is going to win by the skin of his teeth. GOP keeps the House but still not the Senate, though they might pick up a couple seats.

In preparation for the elections, I bought a bag of good weed and a bottle of decent whiskey. I plan on staying up watching results and making some sort of drinking game for the coverage.

I think Obama will win the election narrowly, with fewer than 300 electoral votes.  The Republicans will have a net loss of 5-15 seats in the House, which will leave them with firm control of the chamber.  The Democrats will keep the Senate, I predict 51-47-2; and both independents will caucus with the Democrats, effectively giving them 53-47 control.

And I agree with Eric and DiscoBerry.  If the Republicans want to filibuster everything, then let them break out their state capital's phone book for a good, long read.

It's possible, but not particularly likely.  Obama has been showing a small lead in national polls (http://fivethirtyeight.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/11/04/state-and-national-polls-come-into-better-alignment/).  Still, fivethirtyeight is putting the likelihood of Romney winning the popular vote but losing the electoral college at 6.9 percent, which is not an insignificant possibility (if their model is accurate).

I wish the government could abolish the Electoral College. Nothing says democracy like a bunch of dudes that could, on a whim, decide to elect whoever the hell they wanted. Goooodddd timessssss.

That said, I'm leaning towards Obama winning. Incumbency non-sense. Also, I see change. I've seen change in the attitude of everyone around me. Economy is looking better, I love obamacare, and foreign policy's been mended. The fact people can't see the changes? Non-sense.

Nope, florida, and we had Amendment 2, but since SSM wasn't legal in the first place, it wasn't mentioned much.  North Florida, though where I live, has a very large fundamentalist population.  Ironically it also has a very large gay and lesbian population (according to my wife, who is very active with helping the LGBT community).

Ok, so in Maryland the issue of SSM is on the ballot. The law was passed but enough conservitards whined loudly enough to get it set up as a ballot initiative, Question 6. And it turns out some of the local churches are going to station dickwads at polling places to harass people against SSM. So this will be a good opportunity for me to get some questions answered, like how man and woman only is "biblical" marriage when those other verses from the bible support the other forms (which reminds me, I need to look those verses up). And how if marriage is supposedly a religious thingy, how about non Christians marrying? And if marriage is supposedly that sacred, I want to hear an explanation for divorce rates so freaking high. And lastly, I want to know how two people of the same sex cheapens what me and my wife have.

So as you can imagine, I was happy to hear I might get to ask some of these questions. But then I thought maybe I was being some combination of ignorant and selfish. I thought perhaps you guys here had some questions I could ask. Ones perhaps I had missed or you want answers to. If you can let me know tonight or tomorrow morning (Eastern time zone), I'll try to ask them and get answers. And if possible, put the answers on YouTube.

Ask about divorce. They always argue that somehow SSM ruins the sanctity of marriage, but tend to be okay with divorce. You'd think they'd be against divorce since the vows have that til death part in them. How is breaking that not ruining the sanctity of marriage?

But Orange County Elections Supervisor Bill Cowles reopened the polls at one site, a library in the Orlando suburb of Winter Park, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday.

The library was evacuated and voting there was suspended for four hours on Saturday because suspicious items were found on the grounds. A bomb squad safely detonated both - a cooler containing small electronics and what investigators described as a bag of miscellaneous garbage.

Ballots cast at the library on Sunday will be held as provisional ballots in case of a successful challenge to the judge's ruling that allowed the voting to resume on Sunday.

Irish Betting Company So Sure Obama Will Win It’s Paying Out a Day Early:

The controversial Irish bookmaker Paddy Power is certain President Obama is a lock for another four years in the White House. How certain? With over 24 hours remaining before an official winner is declared, the company is already paying out over $800,000 to the gamblers who picked Obama over Romney.  Known for its headline-grabbing gimmicks, Paddy Power announced the move in a half-page ad that ran in today's Irish Times and the Times of London. Not very surprising coming from the bookie that temporarily changed its name to "O'Bama Power" last year, but the early payout and the provocative ad still bothered a few people.

I ♥ Australia. America is deciding the fate of the free world today/tomorrow and our front page news is the 100 million dollar lotto and the Melbourne Cup.

Except Morgenleoht is right those two things will be front page news, the US election might get 3rd page or a bit of the front page. Then again they may work it into the Headline, eg Obama is over the Green Moon.

Apparently some machines in Ohio have been "malfuctioning".

Is this the right place for this?
I'd say its the right place. *eyes Ohio Republicans warily*

Dad says it was a touch screen miscalibration ( I swear if I hear a joke about it cause of my username I might smack the person who makes it) and they fixed it but... yeah.

Check and double check your ballot before clicking "OK" everyone.

This is why they needed Garrus to do the calibrations.

Last night, I had an encounter which showed that civility isn't completely gone from American politics. I was out getting food, and I saw a few people with signs supporting John Koster, the Republican candidate for our congressional district. Now, not only did I vote for his opponent, Democrat Suzan DelBene, but I've also been interning for her. So I went up to them, and after mentioning that I worked for Suzan, asked how long they spent out at this crosswalk (realize it was rather chilly). They suggested that Suzan come out in her limo (she is a multi-millionaire, and has not shied away from using her money to fund her media blitz). I laughed, and asked them to make sure Koster had his concession speech ready. They laughed, we both agreed that tomorrow will be interesting (the election is pretty much on a knife edge, as this district was deliberately designed as a swing seat), and I left to puck up my sushi.

I'm not entirely sure what tonight is going to be like. I'll be at the official press event, where Suzan will presumably deliver either her victory or concession speech. I did the same thing on primary night, but that night, we had nothing to concern ourselves with except for the primary in the 1st District. Now, we'll be watching the returns for our own race, along with those for the Presidency, the governorship, the Senate, and several referenda (including one legalizing gay marriage, and another legalizing pot - both would be national firsts if they passed). I also wonder if there might be anything different because this seat is currently vacant - the incumbent, Jay Inslee (D) resigned to run for governor, so there's technically two elections going on - one to finish out Inslee's term, the other for the next term. If Suzan wins tomorrow night, she will become a Congresswoman immediately, and presumably will be in DC for the lame duck Congress.

Less than a day, and it's over, though I'm sure the talk will continue.  Just out of curiosity, has anyone experienced hostility from the left for disagreeing with them?  I'm not talking about anger for sexist, homophobic statements directed toward them.  I mean has anyone seem them get hostile just because someone disagreed?  I'm asking because I see very little of it on and offline, while the right seems to explode if you so much as point out that Ryan forgot to carry the 1 in his economic plan.

It's sad to say that's one reason I voted almost completely D this year.  Actually the only times I did not vote for a democrat was when they weren't on a ticket, in which case I voted for the NPA or GRE, which is close enough as far as I'm concerned.

If you look closely, Silver says that while the electoral math is not a friend of Romney in the current conditions, the most likely Romney victory scenario comes from a super-low turnout that no one anticipated. There's been evidence so far of the voter suppression movement not really working so far, but on the day itself we may have a totally different story.

Quote
In order for Mr. Romney to win the Electoral College, a large number of polls, across these states and others, would have to be in error, perhaps because they overestimated Democratic turnout. It’s this possibility, more than the chance of a successful hail-mary in a state like Pennsylvania, that accounts for most of Mr. Romney’s remaining chances of winning the Electoral College.

Silver's map is predicting 315 EVs, higher than most places. That's because his model has no true tossups... But his own model also puts Florida's vote at 49.9%-49.7%, which is close enough to render a Bush-Gore-style chaos. Except that even if Florida ends up going Romney's way (which is actually more likely), its still 286EVs. Lose Ohio as well? 268-268.

Another possible guide. Can't attest to its accuracy but I think if VA and NC both go down, we'll hear Republican crying from Titan:

I went with a write-in cadiddate, Rocky Anderson(Justice Party), this year. That being said, I did a pity vote, and voted for NY State Sen. Steve Saland(R), just to mess with the local nutters, they hate him because he's willing to reach across the aisle, and he voted in favor of gay marriage. The rest was all Democratic Party.

I voted Republican for governor, because Rob McKenna comes off as a moderate, and putting aside parties, I'd vote for a state AG over a congressman for governor. I always vote mixed for local offices, because that makes bipartisanship the only option. In particular, my dad suggested (and I agree) to always ensure that the treasurer and the auditor are of different parties. I went all Democrat for federal offices, and for the state legislature (my family are big fans of our longtime rep, Ross Hunter).

I did do one write-in, for fun. Randy Dorn is the incumbent county superintendent for public education, and once again, he's running unopposed. So I did a write-in... for Randy Dorn.

When Obama was elected I remember watching his inauguration speech live. Bad choise really since I was just between shifts... Meaning that I had only a 8 hour break from work before my next shift began.

On the other hand that was the last time I had a job for more than 2 months... Oh man Obama really was bad for jobs since I felt the effects all the way across the sea.

(Well I did do some odd jobs, mostly one or two day one time jobs through one company and I did study some more untill I got this job last month... Hoping to keep this one a bit longer.)

Aaand back to the election topic: Obama seems to be leading at the moment, at least according to the live feed at Youtube.

Edit ------

Maybe I'm late to this one (didn't see anyone else posting this so here it goes)

A Pennsylvania electronic voting machine has been taken out of service after being captured on video changing a vote for President Obama into one for Mitt Romney, NBC News has confirmed.

The video was first posted on Youtube by user “centralpavoter.” It shows a voter’s finger repeatedly pressing the button for Obama, but a check mark coming up next to Romney’s name.

By the way, if Puerto Rico actually became the 51st state, it would be the 29th most populous state with 3.7 million people.

That's a whole lot of potential Hispanic voters.

I'm liking these results so far. Looks like Obama got VA just barely, and VA got Kaine for Senate.

Also good to see the legalization of same-sex marriage and medicinal marijuana in a couple states.

Against my better knowledge I went to check the political section on a certain re-enactmen forum I like. (well apart from that political section)

Quote
I hold out no hope for victory. I have lost faith in my countrymen and I have grown to hate what our society has degenerated into.

The noose tightens and the shadow darkens.

We proceed on our way to societal collapse, the votes of the unwashed, gloating masses of our teeming and filthy coastal urban sprawls dragging the rest of us along with them on their mad, drunken reel down the path to eventual ruin.

Also comments about Obama taking away CCW and how he has apparently publicly stated that he will take away second amendment.

Suprisingly there was no whining or flaming in the thread celebrating the same-sex marriage laws passing.

Unfortunately, I live in one of the Dumbfuckistan states so the liberals have about a snowball's chance in hell of making any headway here. Half the items on the ballot were concerned with busting the teachers' union and gutting education.

Just to address a couple questions from several pages back, the wait time for voting really depends on your location. I was in and out in five minutes. Other people say it took them half an hour, others said an hour or two. I don't know the average time, but it's definitely not three-hour lines everywhere.

I just got back from the DelBene campaign event, and it looks like the Washington State Democrats clobbered the Republicans. Pot's legal, gay marriage is looking good, and we also elected a blind man born to Iranian immigrants to the state legislature (Cyrus Habib, in my own 48th Legislative District).

On a more personal level, I also spoke briefly with Ross Hunter, who is the other representative for the 48th. I'd actually met him before, at the local Democratic caucus in 2004. Mom was our precinct delegate, although she listened to me a lot. When I mentioned that I was "that kid", he remembered me (I was 15 at the time), and even asked me what I was doing now. I also met my own town's mayor. But most importantly of all, Suzan DelBene (D-WA) is the new representative for Washington State's 1st Congressional District. And I helped get her there.

Yumeji, where are you in the state, just out of curiosity?

I decided to duck into 4chan to see how badly the /pol/s are taking it and noticed someone put up this post.

>mfw Mann Coulter says "if we don't nominate Chris Christie, Romney will be the nominee and we'll lose"
>mfw Chris Christie is now being blamed for Romney losing
>mfw Mann Counter created the most ironic and schadenfreude-satisfying self-fulfilling prophecy in recent political history

This was golden to me since I completely forgot about that line.

It's more or less a contrast of age.  The youth are mostly liberal, south Florida will always go dem, central florida and north florida are for the most part the most consvervative as that's where alot of the retired elderly live.  Ultimately, it's time against the old cons as they die off and be replaced with more moderate voters with each generation.

Florida also shot down Amendment 8 (giving federal $ to religious groups) and passed 9 (allowing tax breaks to spouses of soldiers/responders who die).

I think Florida just made up for 2000.

They shot down public funding for abortions however.

Not true. They voted no on the ballot initiative that would ban the use of public funds for abortion.

Kyrsten Sinema won her Arizona Congressional race, making her the first openly bisexual person elected to congress.

Now that Pete Stark is no longer in the House, that also makes her the country's only openly atheist congressperson.

Republicans have control of the House (191 vs 232), and Democrats have control of the Senate (52 vs 45 + 2 independent).

And the ironic thing is that they don't have a problem with socialism when it comes to farm subsidies.

That's because they circlejerk the stereotype of the only Obama supporters are the ones without jobs and only want shit for free.

I'm employed and don't have welfare and voted for Obama, I'm a glitch in their matrix.

So Romney's HQ was in Boston, right?  I wonder what he was thinking when these results occured:

OBAMA - BIDEN 197382 78.86%
ROMNEY - RYAN 48274 19.29%

Also, MA seemed to be one of the few states where Obama absolutely destroyed Romney.  Nearly every other state was extremely close.  I guess Romney wasn't as successful there as he thought.

Sounds like another jackass with butthurt. We really don't need these negative attitudes honey, especially when you fail to acknowledge how the republicans have failed the American people in their quest to act like babies over their personal dislike for Obama, and I say this as someone who voted 3rd party. Also I'll say it again, we need to stop the whole "poor are lazy" bs. I would say this one of the biggest problems in this country is how we shame the poor, we call them lazy, when they're not, we say "we want them to pull themselves up by the bootstraps" all while denying them the bootstraps in order in order to do so.
