Ummm, real liberals are anti-war, people like Obama aren't real liberals and most Democrats for that matter, heck the Democratic party is considered to be a center-right party. So can we stop calling them "liberals", "socialists", "marxists" and whatever else you're calling them this week?

The comic has a point, IMO. The shootings would not have gone on as long, and more deaths could have been prevented, if an adult certified with the use of a firearm saw the shooter and fired to defend other people. The fact is that a lot of these school shootings happen in gun-free zones, so clearly simply putting a smiley sign up doesn't do shit to stop a psychopath who wants to murder their classmates. I'm not talking about letting any brat who finds a pistol in the backseat of his parent's car bring it to school, but if a teacher or other adult faculty member is certified and trained in the use of a firearm, there's no reason why he or she shouldn't be allowed to use it to protect other students in the event of a hostile intruder.

I think the challenge with that strategy then is how to secure the gun from students while allowing the certified teacher easy access in case of emergency. And I think if the teacher carried the gun on his or her person, would-be shooters would then know who is certified and who isn’t, and preemptively target the certified teachers first.

As far as I can tell, the school shootings that occur here in Canada -- which are, for the record, much rarer than they are in the US, even if one accounts for population differences -- aren't any bloodier than the ones down south despite our much stricter gun control, which suggests to me that teachers and other faculty not having guns really isn't the problem here.

Plus, the risks of having armed weapons around kids far, FAR outweigh the potential benefits of having a firearm during a school shooting, being that these kinds of tragic events are not anywhere near as common as people seem to think. The chance of an accident occurring (kid gets a hold of gun and accidentally harms him/herself, teacher does something idiotic despite being licensed and trained in using firearms, etc.) is a hell of a lot higher than some nut turning up and opening fire.

people who want teachers to carry guns you have to keep them locked in a safe since the worst thing is some kid getting to them.

That's what I meant to say, that I have no problem with an adult who has training and all that jazz with a firearm, being allowed to carry a firearm in the place, where ever it might be, I just think a situation may be that there in so much chaos, that they may panic, be overwhelmed to the point and not know what to do, or they would have to wait until the right moment, if that ever comes to them.

They could always keep the gun on themselves, but are dumb as a box of rocks if they don't have the safety on.

I don't think teachers should be forced to carry guns. Only teachers who want to carry guns, are qualified to do so, and pass safety tests should be able to bring guns to school. Obviously that involves keeping the gun in a secure location where students cannot reach it.

My problem with the gun argument in general is that it's a red herring. The problem isn't necessarily the lack of gun or the over abundance of guns (though they may contribute to the problems.) The problem is deeper and more rooted society and how people are treated (affecting how they react).
That may be the single gayest thing I have ever read on this board. Or the old one. ;)

Dad has often told me that even if he were to have a gun on his person while teaching, that doesn't guarantee that there'd be less of a bloodbath. Based on a variety of factors.

After all, in a few of the shootings in the past couple of decades the teachers have either been shot first or shot early, thus preventing them from reacting to anything even if they had a gun themselves.

Also, the Arizona shooting (Giffords) was stopped not by another gun, but 1) a man with a folding chair and 2) a retired Colonel who just tackled him. So, further argument that another gun owned by a trained and licensed teacher would not put a stop to more killings.

I thought atheists were supposed to be the evil science-types. You know, the type of folk that would have discovered Ultraviolet radiation.

"I have seen no evidence to support this conclusion" does not mean "I have to literally see something to believe in it". We can measure the non-visible portions of the spectrum and see its influence on the world around us, which is more than I can say for god.

This. Gun control does factor into it, to some extent, but it's not the primary problem.
