Asperger's Syndrome Removed From DSM-5

I... honestly don't know what to say about this. I use autism/Asperger's interchangeably because most people I know don't know squat about the disorder. But I took a perverse pride in calling myself an Aspie because it sounds way better than 'autie'.

For those who don't want to read the article, basically Asperger's Syndrome has been wiped and folded into Autistic Spectrum Disorder in the latest DSM.

I reckon websites like Aspies for Freedom and the more 'supremacist' sorts of non-neurotypicals will provide mainpage-worthy material though...

If I remember correctly, Asperger's Syndrome was basically a significantly less severe form of Autism. Further those with Asperger's for the most part could function in society, not perfectly, but well enough for it to not be classified as a disorder. I admit, I may be wrong about this.

It makes sense to move it under the spectrum of Autism as it is basically the same underlying condition. It still came as a bit of a surprise to me, but then I was not really paying attention to the changes in DSM-V regarding autism, being focused on conditions more related to my own problems.

Considering that asperger's and autism have very similar definitions (though one is certainly much broader than the other) it makes sense to me, really. It's not that Asperger's no longer has a name or a meaning; if you have asperger's, you still have it. It's just that it's been re categorized.

Interesting. And all this time, I thought Aspergers was already a form of autism. I knew they weren't interchangeable, but I thought it was already considered low grade autism. Huh.

I read about this earlier and it could be beneficial. I know some schools didn't recognize Asperger's as a condition where the student may need extra help in some areas, and now that it's been re-categorized under autism, those students could get the help they need.
Guys, this is getting creepy. Can we talk about cannibalism instead?

Please don't self-diagnose yourself with Asperger's. Have a modicum of self-respect and intellectual integrity.

I don't think that's what she's saying.

Honestly that is the best part.  No one will want to diagnose themselves as autistic so fewer assholes who claim they are aspies who aren't

She just said folks around her didn't know the difference.  Nothing to say she doesn't, or hasn't been professionally diagnosed

"Moron" was a proper psychological term too if I remember correctly. "Spastic" and "retarded" were also both medical terms if I remember correctly again.

I don't really have a point or anything to add to the discussion, I just thought people might find that itneresting.

The current term is mental retardation.  One does wonder why don't they edit the term due to how common retard is in slang

There's been controversy as to whether or not the new criteria will exclude a huge chunk of ASDers from getting help and such, and quite frankly, I don't disagree; I know I won't fit the new stuff. Never mind not having the Asperger's label; come next May, I wonder whether I'll be on the spectrum at all, legally speaking.

Their folding Asberger's into High Functioning autism, most likely. So we'll still have a disorder, just it'll have a different name.

I'm now an autistic! Woo?
The material needs a defender more than the spiritual. If there is a higher power, it can defend itself from the material. Thus denotes 'higher power'.
