Title: Boy bullied for having an MLP bag told not to bring it to school

Yup.

After Grayson Bruce, 9, was bullied at school for bringing his lunch to school in a My Little Pony bag, school officials told Grayson to leave the bag at home because it was causing a distraction.

Yes. The kid was bullied for bringing a bag that displayed the fact that he's a fan of MLP, and the school's response was not to punish the bullies, but rather to tell the kid not to bring that bag to school on the grounds that it's a "distraction".

I'm pretty sure that's what teachers and administrators are told to do during whatever training they get to deal with discipline problems. "You're being bullied for being different? Stop being different! But always remember that you're one of God's special snowflakes!"

In other words, differences are okay, as long as you pretend to conform.

Amazing.  Just amazing.  It is totally telling a rape victim that what they were wearing triggered something inside their rapist into raping them.  When of course reality is...IT'S THE RAPIST'S FAULT 100%!

Why do schools never do anything to actually punish the bullies? my brother was bullied for years before my parents actually found out. Some kids just need the shit slapped out of them, and their parents too.

The victim should be mature enough to move on from MLP.   <turns fan on>

Eh, he's nine. We were all into kiddy shows at that age.

When he gets old enough to [not] shave and hang around with socially-inept bronies, it's time for some intervention.

My guess is shit like this happens because it's easier to make a small change to a single party than it is to deal with the actual situation.  Kid being bullied for a backpack?  Don't bother with the lengthy, difficult process of punishing the bullies and dealing with their parents and addressing harmful societal perceptions; just take away the backpack.  Problem solved.

Lazy pricks.  This is what happens when parents have too much sway over school politics.  It becomes all about coddling poor widdle Johnny Fuckup and less about making sure they have the tools they need to survive in the real fucking world.  Hate to be dog-eat-dog and a tad...Randroid about it, but if the little bastard fucks up and starts making life hell for other students, expel the little overdeveloped cumshot, and fuck what the parents think.

Why yes, I do in fact give zero fucks about the feelings of bullies.  Didn't want 'em hurt?  Shouldn't have decided to pick on other kids, you little shitskid.

I was bullied, and yet who got expelled from school? Me. Never the bullies, but me, for acting back. Grr.

I hope Mom & the kid make a noise.

This is what happens when Wingnuts run for School Administration & such. Time for the Progressive & sane to run & take over. Surely it would be easier than running for a big office like Governor, Senator or President.

Progressives need to run for office from the bottom-up! That's how the Tealiban Wingnuts took over!

We can fight this.

To Mom & kid, get the ACLU and keep bringing the MLP stuff to school!

Someone suggested bringing back corporal punishment, but applied to the parents. I rather like that idea.

Unexpected: Glenn Beck has actually come out in support of the bullied kid.

Expected: In order to use the kid's story to beat up more straw-liberals (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BE0VvVOfzuY).  "If this boy had claimed he liked ponies because he was 'sexually confused', the entire world would have stopped and targeted this school.  But because he's straight, well, there's no 'protected class' for straight boys, therefore they do nothing and allow it to happen."

Because clearly a 9 year old kid is going to have a developed sexuality.

Because it's not like conservative values which emphasize traditional gender roles and demonize anything different had a hand in facilitating this kind of environment or anything.

But hey, everyone in the comments seems to think misblaming is perfectly fine as long as he's supporting the kid, since most of the comments seem to be giving him kudos.

But hey, everyone in the comments seems to think misblaming is perfectly fine as long as he's supporting the kid, since most of the comments seem to be giving him kudos.

On his main radio show (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D9nocjmBwgI), Beck continued to insist that the kid should be allowed to like whatever he wants and be himself and not be punished for it, which I'd commend coming from anyone else, but coming from him it rings of a "right for the wrong reasons" sort of thing.  Especially because he clarified it with "and not in that 'embrace diversity' sort of way that liberals like, since that's nothing but 'political correctness'."

Taken together with his other statements, it feels like that when presented with a choice between defending traditional gender roles and twisting the story to make the point that straight white men were being systematically victimized by liberal oppressors, he chose the latter.  Especially because he made it a point to continuously reaffirm the boy's masculinity to make the point that this poor, masculine, straight, white boy was being bullied for being masculine, straight, white, and male and that's why the school allowed it.

This actually is the reason. It takes time and effort for administrators to individually look at each situation and students and tailor a response to them. So they try to make up for it by just applying a blanket response to everything and not thinking about it.

Unfortunately, most schools I know would probably consider that "inciting a riot" or some similar bullshit and shut it down.  Schools in the US have less free speech than most fucking prisons.

Arguably, I know someone in passing with a DJ-P0n3 suit.  With weighted, steel-shod hooves for authenticity.  She knocked out a guy at a con with them when he groped another con-goer in front of her during a rave.

Go her. I made my Harry Dresden staff from an actual branch off a tree in my backyard, and it's solid enough to use as a rather strangely-shaped bludgeon. I'm the unofficial security guard for my group.

Yeah, you could actually do that on school grounds up until maybe the eighties. Get bullied? Beat the dickwad coward back. Problem solved. Maybe a debriefing in the principal's office, maybe a couple days after school detention, but no big whoop.

It's not like today where nobody cares who started it.
