No, the Illuminati were a bunch of anarchists.  They were opposed to the monarchy, but only insofar as they were opposed to all forms of the nation-state (along with organized religion).

And while the Enlightenment contained a lot of good ideas, it's important to remember that there were a lot of different philosophies arising at the time, not all of them similar.  Rousseau, for example, felt that progress was inimical to mankind, and that we should reject art and science as artificial and harmful.

The Illuminati were frankly a bunch of nutters.  However, they were never particularly powerful or influential.  If it wasn't for the paranoia-inducing stories of them infiltrating another secret society, and the terrified reactions of the various governments of the time, it's doubtful they'd be remembered today.

I'm pretty sure the Global Jewish Conspiracy didn't approve the establishment of a new front group at our last meeting. Then again, we didn't approve ANYTHING at our last meeting.
