I explained the same thing to my supervisor at work. Although, I threw in the caveat that I'd look it up during break just because I kept hearing about new cases in the United States despite having been previously certain ebola wouldn't be an issue here. When I did look it up, I explained that the new cases were all nurses who had been around someone at the time when they'd been vomiting heavily, and that prior to being admitted, said patient had been around dozens of people who did not catch the virus. I think that calmed her down.

They probably caught it when they were cleaning the vomit up and didn't know it was contagious. I feel for medical staff. Their job is really quite risky given how easily some things can be spread. Not to mention that accidents happen. Still it seems like its well contained in America.

So much. I was talking with some people in the program I'm in who mentioned about ebola, and I told them not worry, as it is only contagious for a very short time before symptoms show, as long as you don't fuck someone who's bleeding from their eyes or play around in puddles of blood, you should probably be fine. And they started freaking out, and one even said they thought it could be airborne because of some nurses who were taking care of the guy who had itgetting it, to which I responded, yeah, they're around him all the time, its way more easy for them to get it than someone else.

So pretty much don't act like the protagonists of Eli Roth's Cabin Fever movies. Got it.

Don't act like that ever, really.

If you look at it the other way around, voter apathy is a sign of a secure democracy. People don't struggle for the right to choose their leaders when they are confident that they already have that right.
Or that they have simply lost faith in democracy.

In Finland elders complain that the youth aren't voting. The problem is that the only candidates that pass elections are almost entirely 30+ years old. The youth tried to get their voice heard and when they failed repeatedly they lost the motivation.

This is affected by the way the vote count works in Finland. The person who gets the most votes in party X is counted as having gotten all their votes, the second has 50% and so on. This means that the few "veterans" who consistently get votes (and more importantly, get votes from OUR numerous baby boomer generation) are the most likely to pass and the rookies are only "sacrificial lambs" who get votes for the party but will not be able to win.

One hopes that this is not the end result:

Here, voter apathy usually results in extreme rightwing candidates winning elections, as they are more dedicated voters. We truly do get the government we deserve, then, in a sense, even if it is not the government we want.

Hence, GET OUT THE VOTE!

We need to encourage our fellow Progressives to vote.

Here's some resources:

Also, The Dems aren't perfect and candidates may come off as fuddy-duddies (like the situation in Finland). But I say, progress is often slow and we should quit waiting for the ideal. The longer you wait, the ideal wont come. Go with who's available, the "least of the evils". If a Lefty isn't available, go for the most moderate & sane person.

And what should we do if the first-past-the-post system makes your vote worthless, in my area the tories have 60% of the vote.

Vote anyway so they only get 59.99% of the vote.

And what if I disagree with the other 4 parties? Lib Dems are traitors, Labour are Tory light, Greens are nutters who are against nuclear power, and UKIP are freaking UKIP.

Mark your ballot for two candidates, leave it blank, just make sure it gets in the box.

Was thinking more setting my ballot on fire in protest but that would probably get me in trouble.

If you disagree with all of them and you wish to effect change, you should have run for office (EDIT: or directly support the campaign of someone you do agree with and help them run for office). Otherwise, you're only sending the message that you endorse the candidate that other people pick for you.

Consumption is not a politically combative act — refraining from consumption even less so.
