That's probably a misconception, but if he had wanted to be king he probably could have gotten enough support to do so.

And he could well have been president-for-life if he hadn't stepped down after two terms in office as well. In fact, it's really lucky that George Washington was a genuinely nice guy who stuck to his principles; if he'd been ambitious enough, he could well have turned the United States into a self-serving dictatorship.

Right.

Of course, it ended up happening a couple of centuries later, but what can you do?

At least we have an admittedly slim chance of fixing our situation without a violent revolt or international intervention.  Proper dictatorships, more times than not, lack that option.

That's wildly inaccurate.  Positioning and campaigning for 2016 began well before the 2014 elections.

I guess this fits this thread the best, despite not being a political cartoon exactly.

Hope this one works.

EDIT: It worked! Anyway, I'm not fully libertarian myself, but I do share some of their tendencies. And yes, I realize some of the things in the "prison wall" are not actually bad things at all.

This is probably one of the very few political cartoons with a sentiment that both the libertarians and the socialists can agree on.

The general gist of that cartoon is pretty accurate, its just the specifics of those bricks that make it a bit silly. Wipe the walls clean and it becomes a cartoon that is basically true to everyone.

It gets sillier than that; there's also "chemtrails", "ATF", "Agenda 21" and "ticket cameras".

Hopefully this argument keeps going, it's a very interesting one. That said, it's my personal opinion that the answer lies in our much-beloved mixed economy. To me, the ideal economic system would look very similar to the United States economy - just with more regulations and less freedom for corporations to do whatever the fuck they want with our government.

The United States still has a basic contradiction: we accept democracy for our laws, but we tolerate a dictatorship in the workplace. Socialism at least addresses that contradiction.

The easy solution is strong trade unions with a lot of institutional power. If an employer tries to sack a trade union member for being one, jail

And the difference is... what, exactly?

If you give a union too much power, how do you stop it from basically becoming another hierarchy with a "CEO" that hoards all of the money and leverages power to basically "fire" any dissidents?
