Large Solar Flare on 3/6/12
« on: March 08, 2012, 12:56:20 am »
Last Tuesday, there was a large solar flair that was the biggest one in five years. There is a possibility of slight electronic disruption on Thursday morning, and a good chance of auroras appearing at high latitudes.

Update from Spaceweather.com: A coronal mass ejection (CME) hit Earth's magnetic field on March 8th around 1100 UT. The impact was weaker than expected, sparking only a mild (Kp=5) geomagnetic storm. However, the storm could intensify in the hours ahead depending on electromagnetic conditions in the wake of the CME. High-latitude sky watchers should be alert for auroras.

All of this is to be expected. Solar activity goes through an 11 year cycle (roughly) of peaking and tapering off. The next peak should take place in a little over a year, so we're going to see an increase in sunspots and flares at it approaches, and those of us who are far enough north will get a pretty light show in the night skies.

As an aside, I'm freaking stoked for 2013. The northern lights were amazing during the last peak -- I remember one night in particular where they were bright enough and moving in such a way so as to create the illusion that they were coming down towards us. If they're even half as awesome this time around, they'll still be worth the wait.

What should I do if I see an aurora?
I am an old man, and I've seen many problems, most of which never happened.

Recite the entirety of The Iliad from memory, in the original Homeric Greek. The fate of the world depends on it.
