Google actually alters your search results depending on what you've put in previously (depending, of course, on the cookies they have stored). It's not that they have a bias, it's that they're happy to reinforce
your bias.
As an example, I've just searched for "barack obama" and got the re-election website, the White House website, his Twitter feed and Facebook page, two Wikipedia articles, the
Telegraph, the
Independent, the
Washington Post, the
Guardian, Bloomberg and the
Chicago Tribune. Google thinks I'm not American and that I'm an Obama supporter, although it's clearly prepared to hedge on both bets.
Your crazy right-wing uncle (if you have one) would put in the same search and get Fox News, the Drudge Report, WND and a load of blogs about how he's a Muslim/Communist/Muslim Communist.
