Reminds me of my former boss.  An older gentleman who was hard of hearing, he tended to speak loudly, even when he was happy.  Also he's a pretty big guy, so he'd approach a kid standing at the counter and happily ask if the kid wanted a cookie, but because of his deep loud voice and his towering over the child, the kid would run away crying. 

More than once, I've seen a kid run screaming while my boss just stood there dumbfounded.  Of course, I'd be laughing every time.

A lot of old black and white productions were filmed in brightly colored studios. I think it had something to do with making the various monotones look better, but I can't remember.

Yep. While you only have varying shades of grayscale, different colors have different shades. Bright, clashing tones allowed for you to get certain items to stick out against their surroundings. Same reason why horror films used chocolate syrup for blood: it comes out very dark, while actual red is light gray and blends in with skin tones.

If I remember correctly, when filming Doctor Who in black and white, the Dalek's had red on them because red makes better black in black and white or something like that.
