I was just in the costume store this weekend looking for costumes for my toddler.  She wears a 5t, so she can fit into a girls' small.  I don't consider myself a prude or anything, but I wanted to tear the place apart looking at what passes for girls costumes...we actually passed up 2 costumes she would have wanted (Tinkerbell and Pink Batgirl) because there was nothing to them.  Short skirts and sleeveless.  For a 3-6 year old (generally the ages that fit that size)...

I used to print a halloween costume catalog that had age appropriate girl's costumes. The funny part was that they'd put the girls, teen, and womens version of a given costume on the same page. The main difference was usually long skirt, short skirt, mini skirt.

This is why I never buy my costumes from a costume store. I usually make them myself by buying the appropriate clothing and throwing it together. I made a pretty nice pirate outfit this way, and the only thing I ended up having to buy from the costume store was the hat, which probably had more fabric on it than any of the women's outfits in the entire damn store. Seriously, I'm going trick-or-treating or to a Halloween Party, not a fetish convention. There's no reason for me to wear a tiny latex miniskirt as a part of a police officer outfit.
