Basic math and multiplication tables had to be mastered to graduate 6th grade, algebra level one was mandatory during grade 7, and had to be passed with at least a C- to enter grade eight. That was back in the '70's in Coral Gables FL, a wealthy town, so probably not universal to FL as a whole. Students got held back a year all the time back then. You just had to pass basic milestones, period. It wasn't a completely horrible embarrassment to get held back, not like you were suddenly riding the short bus to school, but it was a plenty scary motivation to just suck it up and learn that shit whether you liked it or not.

Here, Algebra 1 is normally 9th grade, and a passing grade is 65 or higher.

That's a problem, if that is common across the country now.

What sort of things were in Algebra 1? Just so I can get a handle on it.

Umm, well, despite passing the Regents (state test) with an 80something, that's kinda one of the issues with the school system. We learn for the tests, and then lose it. People tend to be like that for any subject they don't care for. All I can remember is percents and the Pythagorean Theorem. At the same time, I still remember a lot of both global and US history (for global, got a 100 on the Regents, for US History, I got a 90something with a 4 or 5 (out of 5) on the AP test, only reason I'm uncertain is one of the two I did last year was a 4, the other a 5, and both are my best two subjects).

Algebra I, at least in my old state (AR), consisted mostly of learning how to work various kinds of equations.  It wasn't until Algebra II that we got into things like the Pythagorean Theorem.

The problem with a lot of public schools (which most people go to) is that now they simply train kids how to take tests and then that's basically it. And a lot of time if you do have a kid who is actually interested in a subject they're stunted and prevented from doing extra things that interest them.

That may be the single gayest thing I have ever read on this board. Or the old one. ;)

Wait...

How is that subtle? And how does a =/= sign somehow "counter" the claims of pro same-sex marriage advocates?

Because if you say something often enough and loud enough, you'll get people agreeing with you even if you're spouting nonsense.

Yeah, we're trained for tests in normal classes with Regents, but the teachers let students go above and beyond, and if there's no Regents or it's an AP class, they're damn good. Let's put it this way: my English teacher is a bit right leaning, Christian, and me and her get along great and talk a lot about stuff. We disagree on some things, sure, but she's actually an awesome person. Oh, and we have a rent-a-teacher thing at the end of the year. I rented her and had her dress up as John 5. It was awesome. /tangent
