Title: Harriet Tubman to go on US $20 bill
Post by: dpareja on April 21, 2016, 01:58:58 am

To wit, the US $20 bill is being redesigned, to feature Harriet Tubman on the front and Andrew Jackson on the back. The $10 and $5 are also being redesigned, though Hamilton and Lincoln are remaining on the fronts of those bills.

Now if only they would replace "In God We Trust" with "Male Tears", that would make my day.

First it was the Harriet Tubman $20 bill...

...and when molten gold Baphomet dollar coins were raining from the sky, we had no decent red-blooded American denomination to protect us.

I don't like it, honestly. Why? Not because Harriet Tubman is a bad choice, but because there's someone who has done far more for this country than over half of the people currently on American currency - Jackson, Franklin, and especially Grant. Dear god, whoever thought it was a good idea to put Grant on currency needs to be shot. Who is this person?

FDR. Franklin Delano Roosevelt.

No justice until we see FDR on the 50 instead of that stupid general.

At least he'll always have the dime.

I think Jackson might've been put on the $20 as revenge, considering his hatred of centralized banking.

We will after the Purge.

I mean it's a nice gesture but Jackson stays on the back of the bill, where he belongs.  Though saying I got a wad of Tubmans is gonna be weird.

Ironbite-but kinda cool.

I heard they were considering taking Hamilton off the $10, and then Lin-Manuel Miranda happened.

Good riddance in my opinion. Andrew Jackson was a complete asshole.

I think a real "fuck you" would've been if they put an Amerindian on the bill.  Maybe Sequoyah (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sequoyah), since he was Cherokee.

From a Republican (who is saying this in jest, since he knows the parties have drastically changed over the years):

Quote
The founder of the Democratic party was just replaced on the $20 bill by a pro-gun Republican.

Well, if anyone wants my opinion specifically, I'd say Franklin Delano Roosevelt should go on the 20 and Theodore Roosevelt on the 50. He's also the one who should end up on the dollar coin; seriously, the guy's the most badass president we've had and did a lot, and he doesn't get one piece of currency to his name?

Please. "Check your privilege" or GTFO.

You clearly haven't thought through the implications of this.

Unless you're in favour of exclusive programs to hand loads of cash to those evil cis straight white males, you'll be constantly privilege-shaming the underprivileged.  Something they might find quite triggering.

Besides, paper money is deeply offensive to treekins, it's like a jewskin lampshade to them or something.

Paper money is made from cotton. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cotton_paper)

Yes but cottonkins are apparently not a thing.

At least I couldn't find any on tumblr.

As one of those evil cis straight white males, I would be more than okay with that.

At least, I would if I were American.

It could be offensive tangentially to black people, since slaves stereotypically worked cotton fields.

SO Harriet Tubman, the great conductor on the Underground Railroad, who personally helped free so many slaves from the drudgery of picking cotton, as the new face of the twenty dollar bill is an
EPIC WIN!!

And Andrew Jackson goes to the back of the bus.

Ironbite-fitting.

Still doesn't explain how it's supposed to be offensive to treekin.

Out of curiosity why was Jackson on the 20 in the first place?  Besides genocide what did he do to justify getting the same treatment as Lincoln or Washington?

I believe he was a Founding Father.  Other than that, nothing other than being known for calling people out to duels.

Well, there was the Nullification Crisis.

But personally, I think they put him on the 20 as a "fuck you," given his hatred of centralized banking and paper money.

May have been done as a "Fuck you" because he hated the concept of centralized banks.

He was not. The last of the Founding Father presidents stepped down in 1824, and Jackson didn't take office until 1828. But the reason he's on the bill dates back to 1928. That's when he was put on the bill, you see, and Jackson was seen as a different figure than he is nowadays. To quote the Washington Post:

Quote
But Feller, the "Papers of Andrew Jackson" editor, said it's not surprising that the Treasury Department of 1928 would see Jackson as someone worthy of the honor."It's actually astonishing how completely the generalized public image has changed and how rapidly it changed," the historian said of Jackson's legacy. From the late 19th century through the 1960s, Feller said, Jackson was seen by most Americans as a "champion of the common man, a symbol of democracy," and "second only to Abraham Lincoln as the champion of the perpetual union" of the United States of America. In fact, Feller notes: "Abraham loved to quote [Jackson]" during the Civil War, because of "Jackson's striking proclamation against nullification" of the Union.

Naturally, as Native American voices began to speak up, public perception of Jackson changed just a little bit.

Eeh, honestly, I don't remember much about history, except that Jackson was a racist prick.

I looked up to him in middle school for the sole reason one of my fantasies was taking out a cane and smacking one of the bullies on the head, shouting "Vile little cretin! We duel at dawn!"

Over the years I realized he wasn't a very good person, but it takes a special caliber of President to react to someone frothingly insane trying to assassinate you...by taking up your cane and beating the fuck outta him.
