Sweden is now "okay" with public masturbation. On June 6, a 65-year-old man took off his shorts at a beach near Stockholm and began masturbating into the ocean. The man was charged with sexual assault, but was acquitted last week after a judge ruled he was not targeting a specific person.
Even though the Södertörn District Court's judgment stated it “may be proven that the man exposed himself and masturbated on this occasion,” the court decided the man had not committed a crime, a decision the public prosecutor agreed with, though he said in the future public masturbation might be considered disorderly conduct.
I can't quote much more because the article is rather short, but there you have it. I'm largely assuming that this is to offset the awesome Sweden exudes on a regular basis.

Why did they charge hm with sexual assault? This seems like a prosecutor fuckup to me. I assume there are indecent exposure and.or exposure to minors laws in Sweden.

The ruling sounds fair since he surely wasn't targeting anyone. Disorderly conduct or indecent exposure would be more accurate.

He wasn't harming anyone, spying on people or anything so I can agree with the ruling.

That's one of the things that puts me off going in the sea.

I wouldn't go in the water because certain species of fish have been known to swim right up into the root of all men's dreams, and have to be cut out. Oh, and we can't forget jellyfish that do the same thing too.

Which is why the locals have evolved a defence mechanism in the form of balls of steel.

Public masturbation is not legal, it is just filed under a lesser crime than sexual assault.
So in short, nothing has really changed, if you masturbate in public you will get dragged off by the cops for indecent exposure and disorderly conduct same as people who urinate in public.
