I don't think Black Peter/Krampus was the direct antecedent of Santa, but evolved alongside Santa. In a lot of European countries, the two continue to exist side by side.

Yes, there are quite a few variations, and your description is the most accepted one. Like Black Peter evolved into a character of African descent, and the Dutch are now debating phasing him out. The variation I mentioned came from a letter to a newspaper which is not on the internet so I can't copy/paste it here - it is interesting in that it goes back even further in time (he is the Devil in this one) and is very different from the story n the link I provided. Too many variations.
