WASHINGTON -- House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) will resign from Congress at the end of October, his office announced Friday.

In a statement, Boehner's office said that he had only planned to serve in Congress until the end of last year, but changed his plans when former Republican Majority Leader Eric Cantor (Va.) lost his seat.

Boehner was facing pressure from conservative Republicans over a bill to defund Planned Parenthood, and there were rumors that those members would try to oust him as speaker. Boehner, who was first elected to Congress in 1990, became speaker in 2011.

"The Speaker believes putting members through prolonged leadership turmoil would do irreparable damage to the institution," his office said in a statement.

Once again the Tea Party, that oh so loveable monster, has struck again and forced out a seasoned politician because it doesn't understand how politics work.  Kinda sad in such a way when you think about it.

He's House Majority Leader, and there's usually an orderly succession in these matters... but as noted, he might not be crazy enough. (Plus, he's from California, which, however wingnut he is, would be a huge strike against him in Teabaggers' minds.)

This is all because of the Planned Parenthood crap, right?  Boehner told the GOP that if they continued to fight it, nothing would happen, and if they shut down the government again, they'd be handing next years elections to the Democrats.  And now they hate him for it.

So they're slamming him for doing his job and helping his party, just because he said, "We're not going to win this battle.  Let's pick another so we can increase our chances of winning."

Yeah, Boehner tried to be a sensible, pragmatic adversary to the democrats. I hazard a guess he doesn't think they work for Lucifer or some lunacy like that.

And so for not towing their insane line and in the interest of "liberty", Boehner had to go.

They just silenced one of the only pragmatic voices in the party. This sends a crystal clear message to more secular conservatives - you are not wanted in the "Party of God".
