The governor of New Jersey, Chris Christie, has rejected a bill allowing same-sex marriage in the state and renewed his call for a ballot question to decide the issue.

His veto came a day after the state assembly passed the bill. The state senate had passed it on Monday. Christie, a Republican who opposes same-sex marriage, had vowed "very swift action" once the measure reached his desk.

In returning the bill to the legislature, Christie reaffirmed his view that voters should decide whether to change the definition of marriage in New Jersey.

He does realize that the Senate is elected by the general public, right? "The voters" did decide to pass s/s marriage by voting for representatives that supported it. That's kind of how a representative democracy works, dumbass. He is the one going against the "will of the people" because they don't agree with him.

Democratic legislators have not once been able to get enough votes to override one of Christie's vetoes. Not once.

It could, but the trouble is, Republican legislature tends to be unconstitutional. At that point, it doesn't matter how many people support it. Also, it would be difficult to make this argument with the President, as you'd have to show that a statistically significant majority of the entire country didn't find favor with him, in which case, how the Hell did he get elected in the first place?

I'm not shocked, he said he was going to veto it. I believe he's ok with it, but he wants to remain in good graces with the Republican party on a national level so his options will stay open for a run in 2016 as President.
