Title: Well Canada, you don't live up to the stereotype after all.

Saw the headline to this and immediately thought rednecks and the south.  Can't judge articles by their headlines I guess.

It's been just over four months since chef Dave Claringbould decided to realize his dream of owning his own restaurant after fifteen years in the restaurant business.

But this week, he and his co-owner/partner announced they were shutting down their rural Manitoba eatery, having become fed up with the homophobic slurs hurled at them by patrons and town residents alike.  "We were asked if somebody was going to catch something off of the plate because we had prepared the food on it," Claringbould recently told the Winnipeg Free Press. "We were very hurt and upset by it. Some of the narrow-minded things that have been said to us are absolutely shocking."

Pots N Hands opened up in December of last year in the small town of Morris which sits about 45 miles south of Winnipeg.

The home-style cooking restaurant initially proved popular among the 1,700 or so residents, but as soon as word got out that it was run by two gay men, many regulars stopped coming in.

Claringbould and his unnamed partner have experienced similar intolerance before, which is precisely why they've decided to cut their losses and close up shop.

"We're not prepared to go through that again," he said, noting that, despite some support in the wake of their announcement, most people are incapable of change.

George Ifantis, another local restaurant owner, offered a striking example of this when he was asked his opinion on the matter.

"A lot of people don't like it," he was quoted as saying. "You don't know what they're doing in the kitchen."

Quote
Morris mayor Gavin van der Linde and other town council members sought to make it clear that many other residents had no qualms whatsoever about eating at Pots N Hands.

"We have received more emails (complaints) on this as a town than any issue. Ever," van der Linde told the Brandon Sun. "It's going viral in a negative direction, which I don't think is an accurate reflection of what's happening in town."

Well, it is rural Manitoba--I'm not too surprised.

I looked it up, the riding is Provencher, and that one's currently taken by Vic "You're either with us, or you're with the child pornographers" Toews.

I have an online buddy in rural Manitoba, who's bi(and VERY open about it) and she's never said anything about getting grief over her sexuality. But that may be because she lives right outside of Brandon.

What is the Canadian word for redneck anyway?

Um, I imagine they're cooking. Seeing it's a restaurant. Their restaurant. And they're trying to sell food. Jeez. And of course no one would ever think anything like that about a heterosexual couple opening a restaurant together.

Eating food prepared by those guys? But that's how you catch the gayness! ::)

I'd have expected this from Mississippi, not Manitoba.

I see it as an exception that proves the rule. Mississippi has plenty of perfectly nice, non-racist, non-homophobic people living there, too. It just sucks when the dumbasses are all loud and proud. The majority of Canadians are still way ahead on public policy and social justice issues.

Another word for redneck (or really any idiot) in Canada; "goof".

I suddenly wish I was closer to that area.  I'd drop in and order something, and tell those guys that they're awesome.

I thought Canada stopped living up to its stereotype when they voted in that Harper douche.

doesn't surprise me, there's a lot of those idiots in the rural Prairies, especially in Alberta.

Canada isn't perfect, we've never claimed to be perfect.

I've heard that rural Canada is notoriously full of bullshit, but jeez...

It's why the Conservatives are actively trying to drum up opposition to Elections Canada's (a non-partisan agency) proposed redistricting plan for Saskatchewan's federal ridings: it would change those for Regina and Saskatoon from being 4 each, partly urban and rural, to 3 mostly urban for Regina and 2 mostly urban for Saskatoon, reducing their chances in those new ridings and increasing the NDP's. Normally riding boundary changes are basically pro forma votes in Parliament and the only things debated are the names.

This also doesn't address the issue of most provinces being guaranteed a disproportionately large number of seats in the House.

It's interesting to compare the actual number of seats each province gets with the number they'd get if seats were allocated as per the formula used to allocate seats in the US House of Representatives.

Running the numbers (using the 338-seat House proposed for the next election and provincial populations from the 2011 census):

ProvinceComputed seat countActual seat count
Alberta3734
British Columbia4442
Manitoba1214
New Brunswick810
Newfoundland and Labrador57
Northwest Territories11
Nova Scotia911
Nunavut11
Ontario129121
Prince Edward Island14
Quebec8078
Saskatchewan1014
Yukon11

And this doesn't even scratch the surface of all that is wrong with the Senate.

Actually, Harper only got ~39% of the popular vote. Yet he still got majority government.

Also, a good 40% of us didn't even vote. Sorry, world. (http://sorryworld.ca/)

And this is why First Past the Post is a shitty electoral system.
