Old and/or shitty websites
« on: March 23, 2012, 06:36:09 am »
I now present several abominations of html that look like a bad GeoCities page from 1995.

http://www2.warnerbros.com/spacejam/movie/jam.htm - The official website for Space Jam, which has apparently remained untouched since 1996.
http://gottacatchemall-pokemon.com/index.html - Best. Pokemon website. Ever.
http://www.webking.com/ - This guy will make you one badass website, and for only 99 dollars, too! You can't beat that kind of bargain.
http://www.fivedoves.com/ - Jesus loves rainbow text on a light blue background.
http://www.allstarhorsefarm.com/ - The music from the Inception trailer play in the background upon entering really gives it that special touch.
http://georgerrmartin.com/ The official website of George R. R. Martin. You'd think a site with 35 million hits would hire a decent web designer.
http://www.supervideo.com/ - what is this i dont even
http://www.ingenfeld.de/ - OH GOD MY EYES. MY EYES ARE BLEEDING.

Wow.  That last one... something special, alright.  Reminds me of the time Homer Simpson set up his own webpage.

The last one HAS to be intentionally mega-tacky.  You know, a joke.  It's just TOO perfectly gaudy to be non-intentional.

Guys, this is getting creepy. Can we talk about cannibalism instead?

The space jam site is charmingly bad <3

I was going to link J.K Rowling's website but it is currently under construction.

The old version of it was just FULL OF EVERYTHING! Glitter and sparkles everywhere, moving your mouse on top of ANYTHING would cause sound effects and more visual sparkles.

These remind me of a weird crazy-people-on-the-internet story...

Ages ago, I was a regular in a role-playing room on IRC.  It was freeform, and I liked to play wacky, unsheetable characters (see profile image.)

The room had been getting all politicky and weird for a while, but I ignored it, up until two of the characters, who happened to be played by moderators, had a character-wedding, and they somehow created this absolute abomination of a webpage for it that was just about unbearable to look at:  Sparkling cursor, rotating medieval-themed GIFs, dragons and fairies and silly, inconsistent fonts, 'decorative' breaks, just about every tacky website cliche since the invention of HTML, all in pastel wedding-y colors and stuck in a blender...  Get the idea?

Well.  I made a mistake.  I laughed.  I thought it was SUPPOSED to be funny.

It wasn't.  Not only were they totally serious, but the OOC relationship between the two mods was borderline cheating on the 'Bride's' RL husband.  And then one of the 'Bride's' friends (who was herself a piece of work) had a total meltdown, flipped right the hell out.  I was mocking the true blessed pure love of real people!  I was practically pissing on SAINTS!  And then the mods themselves banned me for upsetting this friend.

And now I'm too old for that crap, and in retrospect the whole thing is hilarious.  The end.

Wow, Quasi, and I thought I'd known some "special" people over the internet!

Also, GRRM's site isn't too bad.  Compared to, say, a university website, it's easy to navigate, and the colors don't clash.  The others...OH DEAR GODS MY EYES D:  Colorblind people should NOT make their own webpages.

That leads me nicely onto what, about 10 years after I first discovered it, is still one of my favourite internet toys ever:

http://malfunction.org/fulifier/

(sadly, it probably doesn't make as much sense in this age where CSS is pretty much standard. If you can find older sites that rely mostly on <table> for their layout, it'll be more authentic.)

That last site in the OP has an awesome surprise if you scroll right as far as you can. Check it out for yourselves.

Is it bad if the fulifier makes a site better and easier to read? The site in question is http://timecube.com/ and it managed to get worse since I last visited. He's added something about adults eating teenagers because of belly buttons from their mamas or some shit. And deep in there somewhere he says "I am immortal for I am 82 plus cancer children." I found that while trying to read the whole thing as a challenge. I failed said challenge.
History is full of maniacs, my friend, men and women of intelect, highly perceptive individuals, who's brilliant minds know neither restraint nor taboo. Such notions are the devils we must slay for the edification of pony-kind. Even if said edification means violating the rules of decency, society, and rightousness itself.

George RR Martin's site is a bit old school but still nicely put together.

The rest... Oh god, the rest. I want to be a website designer and I'm ... just... horrified...

I saw an evangelism site recently that had cyan text in bold Arial font on a bright fire-truck red background, and all the hyperlinks were orange and purple. If I remember correctly it also had an American flag at the top, and it played a mind-rapingly bad MIDI version of "Amazing Grace" when you opened the page. I had to look around for like five minutes before I could turn it off. Of course, I probably should have left the site before then.
