I'm supposed an entire government lost a war with birds?  Come on, that's ridiculous.

Honestly, that's pretty much the exact reaction the British first had, especially when they tried to figure out the wildlife. I suppose that over the generations, we locals just got used to all the weird shit.

Suspension of disbelief is key. Just remember that Australia is its own planet separate from ours and it all makes sense.
