I don't doubt that Putin should bear at least some responsibility here, but what exactly was his goal here? Prove that he is every bit the thug we've kinda suspected him to be all along? Look tough? Appeal to some religious extremist fringe who wants AIDS patients to suffer?

Why assume he had a goal? Is there any evidence that taking down the plane was a deliberate action by Putin? (as opposed to an unintended side effect of his actions in Ukraine)

Putin's role in this was arming the separatists with anti-aircraft missiles. He didn't intend to shoot down a commercial airliner, but it wouldn't have happened if he hadn't given weapons to trigger-happy thugs.

They apparently shot down a pair of Ukrainian SU-25s today.

Which means they still have BUKs even though their defense in the Malaysian plane shooting was "WE do not have any missiles like that." In fact, it sounds like they have several BUK systems if they managed to shoot down to fighters at the same time. (And I seriously doubt that they could have their ONE Ukrainian captured BUK in the right location every time.)
