Presumable because he was just getting bigger, and not actually growing up.
I'd be more sympathetic if people here didn't act like they knew what they were saying when they were saying something very much wrong.

Today's episode seemed kinda meh, especially compared to last weeks. also, Fluttershy is dragon-racist. but since they all seem to be dickbags I guess it's fine :P

Considering its apparently commonplace for dragons to destroy towns, kill bird children, steal and hoard everything in sight, I really wouldn't call her racist. Just rightfully scared. Prejudiced is as far as I'd go. If she was truly racist, she would assume Spike would grow up to be the same and treat him with the same fear.

As far as calling all the mane cast dick bags... well, other than exaggerations for comedic affect, if what they do is being a dick bag, than pretty much everyonepony is.

I guess I should have been more clear, I was referring to the dragons  ;D

Yeah, I wouldn't really consider Fluttershy's fear "racist" either. Not even prejudiced, when you consider that she not only is friends with Spike, but was more interested in talking to the dragon than the new pony in town. She was more put off by her own kind than a dragon. She's just absolutely terrified of the raw power and violent natures of adult dragons.

The dragons were definitely jerks. I was going to give them a pass before they descended to, you know, murder.

Anyone complaining about Spike keeping the egg I have noticed some animals do not take their young back if they are touched

Actually, that was just stuff people made up to stop kids from picking up baby birds and trying to take care of them. Birds do not suddenly decide their children are worthless if a human touched one. In fact, most birds don't even have much in the way of a sense of smell, so they can't even tell if you've touched their babies.

In this case, the phoenixes' nest was destroyed, and they flew off with all their hatched young. It's very probable they weren't coming back, considering the egg either a lost cause or a dud. And considering Twilight has a teacher who owns a phoenix, she's likely able to find the information on how to properly care for a baby one.
Maybe it only applies to mammals

I wouldn't think so. I mean, I usually touch a squirrel baby, squirrel mom is all up in my face, chomping away. Same seems to go with most mammals.

I enjoyed today's episode.  I found it amusing.  Also, think about this.  Think about how far the group traveled. From the looks of it near the end of the episode, Twilight transported them from the middle of nowhere to the edge of the Everfree Forest in Ponyville.  The girl is freaking powerful! :D

I like how she initially failed her Teleport.  Almost like a nice nod to D&D.  Almost.

Of course, good thing it didn't end up teleporting them 500 feet in the air, and instead just fizzled.
