“Requiring dysphoria is harmful. It’s damaging. Requiring dysphoria implies that for someone to truly be the gender they are, they need to want the societal stereotypical parts of the gender they are. We cannot be happy with our bodies. Requiring dysphoria, especially genital dysphoria, implies women cannot happily have penises. Men cannot happily have vaginas. Non-binary people cannot happily exist ever, due to how society dictates and enforces the binary. This idea that dysphoria is necessary to exist as a trans person reinforces the outdated notion that the only ‘true’ trans people are those who wish to have genitals that stereotypically conform to the societal notion of what being a man/woman is. It removes non-binary people from existence, yet again, through this notion.”
Looking at this, I think what happened with the tumblr sj community is that, over time, they co-opted the term "trans" as a catch-all term meaning "anything not cis or binary". To me, it seems like the attitude became "well, if they're not traditionally cis, then they
have to be trans! There's absolutely no other option!" That's why we're seeing the push for "you don't need dysphoria to be trans." Because to them, saying someone isn't trans is exactly the same as saying that they're cis male/female. Non-binary people are automatically considered trans no matter what. It's kind of funny that, for all the labels the tumblr community has made to describe even the most mundane things, people are either cis or trans, nothing else. The other problem might be, as I've heard a couple of people suggest, that this community doesn't actually understand what dysphoria is, whether because they, as they claim, don't have it, or they can't properly identify it.
