Title: OMM: Marvel and DC are having gay storylines! WHARRGARBL!

Or: Someone needs to get a life. DC is hinting at having an iconic character go gay, while Marvel is doing a gay marriage in their X-Men comic. And of course, these "one million 'moms'" (I understand that most of them are men, maybe they got their idea from a bad Schwartzenegger/DeVito flick? And they hardly have the numbers they claim to besides) go into a frothy rage over it.

Maybe they should spend more time aiding the poor, helping those who need it, instead of passing judgement that others may hoist them by their own petards on.

I mean, there have got to be thousands of comic book titles available in the USA (more if you count foreign-language stuff).

Speaking of which, I have to wonder how they feel about Japanese tentacle-rape hentai.

Not sure about DC, but Marvel has had gay-friendly story-lines for years now. Northstar -- one half of the aforementioned gay marriage -- was very obviously gay, even before they officially outed him (very, VERY long before they outed him, in fact). Not-A-Million Not-Moms are waaayyyy behind if they're only freaking out about this now.

Marvel has had gay characters since the late 90's. Northstar being the most notible of their characters at the time.
DC has been a little slower in bringing gay characters into their stories. Of course I am a little skeptical about a "main character" turning out to be gay. I really don't expect Superman, Batman, or any of their big names to be changed to such a degree.

I've heard (which is about as reliable as any rumor out there) that it might be a choice between Wonder Woman, Aquaman, and... someone else I forget.

I think it's a bit of a stretch to call Aquaman an "iconic character", though if he were gay I wouldn't be the least bit surprised.

It was hinted at pretty much the entire time, but he wasn't allowed to say "I'm gay" in the comics until 1992.

Hmmm. I can't see them making Aquaman gay, he's WAY too into fishy women. Plus, no gay man would ever wear green tights and an orange scaled scoop-neck top swimming. (Not to mention all the years he had a magic, transforming water hand and all he made it into was a trident...)

Wonder Woman, maybe. She's pretty much been written as a lesbian since they retconned her into a funky kung-fu detective with no powers in the 70s. When's the last time you saw WW pursue a man who wasn't Supes, and therefore unattainable? Plus, you know, any woman who carries a rope with her at all times and wears a crown has SOME issues in the closet.

What about Power Girl? If she was gay her "HEY! LOOK! TITS!" costume might finally make some sense as a desperate attempt to appear straight. I know several lesbians who went through a definite "mega-slutty" phase as a beard.

Maybe Green Lantern? Yeah, he's hooked up with his share of ladies, but he places an awful lot of focus on jewelry for not being Italian.

Martian Manhunter? He wears  a speedo and suspenders (which essentially makes him Mr. March in a hot firemen calendar, and those are NOT marketed to women). Plus he calls himself "Manhunter" for God's sake. Might as well just call himself "Carl Cockhunter."

Who says it's a hero? Maybe a villain is going to come out. Lex Luthor has gone through some major prissy/bitchy phases in his life, plus, you know, he DID choose to make his battlesuit iridescent green and purple...

Bizzarro? If he is the opposite of Supes, me MUST be gay, since Supes is so straightlaced he probably thinks "People" magazine is porn and Wal*Mart bargain-bin underwear is lingerie. (Superman can not possibly be gay since he has x-ray vision and has never been caught crotch-scanning Jimmy Olsen, even to just check and see if the carpet matches the drapes.)

What about the Joker? He is, from a certain point of view, nothing more than a tragically misguided transvestite who knows nothing about make-up. He also wears an AWFUL lot of purple for a white guy. Plus, now that I think about it, what straight man would not have boned Harley Quinn to within an inch of his life five minutes after seeing her?

Who else could it be? Robin? That old outfit was HIGHLY suspicious.

Ras? He does tend to wear dresses and occasionally thrust himself into Lazarus's pit...

Penguin? He hangs out with birds in nightclubs and his nose is practically a dildo. (But that last could be an argument for his heterosexuality, too, I suppose.)

Speculation is running rampant that it's gonna be Alan Scott.  Who's son Obsidian is gay...who hasn't shown up yet and might not exist in NuDCU.  Which means DC is telling us homosexuality is genetic.  Which is stupid.

Ironbite-also last time OMM protested something gay happening in comics Archie had to do a reprinting of their gay wedding comic.

I actually thought the exact same thing when I was watching X-men: Last Stand the other day. Especially the scene with the kid that had wings and his dad was forcing him to be cured.

They are most definitely not going to retcon the sexual orientation of one of their flagship characters. The collective output of all of the neckbeard rage that would ensue would be enough to power a large city.

Well, it's been said it will be a "major, iconic character". It's also been said to be a male character.

That basically boils it down to Superman, Batman, Flash, or Green Lantern. It's be really hard to classify anyone else as both "major" and "iconic". Though with Green Lantern, they do have like four different ones they could pick from.

I think it's more likely that DC's definition of "major", and "iconic" are slightly broader and more inclusive than yours.

In all honesty, if it's one of the big ones, it's Wonder Woman. While a ret-conned gay Flash or Batman or Supes might really upset the fanboys, a lesbian WW would send them into fits of nerdgasmic ecstasy.

But, as someone else mentioned, DCs idea of "iconic" and "major" is pretty damn broad. For God's sake, they consider Power Girl, Booster Gold, and Beast Boy to fit the definition.

I would say the most likely candidates:

Power Girl
Cyborg
Some B list hero from either Stormwatch or the Justice Society
And as an outside longshot, Kilowog

Which is why I promoted him to "B" list status. In the 90s he was most definitely "D."

Personally I would vote for gay Batman. Not that I would see it as the likely case, I just want to see it happen. If only because Joker/Batman relationship already has homosexual undertones. (All from Joker though. And it's not like Batman would ever be attracted to him. But I would like to see Joker's reaction if it turns out that Batman has been boning guys and Joker realises that he still can't get him.)

Then again Batman does have a son (Not that that would be a solid proof either way.) and I think his relationship with Catwoman has been romantic occasionally.



And no I was not planning to make a joke about Batman/Robin relationship. I only remembered it after typing most of this post. I think it's mostly been taken out of context anyway just for the sake of jokes anyway.

The part that makes me laugh the most is the stuff about "confusing children."  First of all, we grown-ups like to read comic books too, thankyouverymuch.

Second, why stop with protesting gay superhero marriage?  Archie's Sonic series has technomancy and talking animals--OMG WITCHCRAFT AND FAMILIARS!!  THINK OF THE CHILDREN!!11!!!one!!!

Actually, I could see it happening, while still being consistent with that comic.

Growing up in a time period where being gay is basically like being an insane psychoraving lunatic, you don't really ever consider the possibility that you're gay.  It's not something you're comfortable talking about, just like you're not comfortable talking about the fact that Aunt Wilma spends her days talking to her sockpuppet and making out with it.

I'm not saying that IS what's happening, ... but just because he's uncomfortable talking about homosexuality doesn't mean he's straight, it could mean that he's so far in the closet that he's been living in Narnia his entire life and never knew it.  People don't just wake up one day and go "I'M ATTRACTED TO THE SAME SEX AND NOT THE OPPOSITE SEX, SO I AM GAY". It's more or less a subtle realization, and the willingness to realize that. </preaching to the choir>

Heck, for most of puberty, I believed I was bisexual because I couldn't possibly be gay!

My vote's for Batman or the Flash. The former because duh (yep, that's my reasoning), the later because he's already worn the Blue Lantern ring of Hope and I think it's apt for such a person to stand with the crowd who is slowly, painstakingly moving toward equality.

It wouldn't be surprising if Batman (Bruce Wayne version) was Bat-curious. I'd believe he is bi but not exclusively gay: he's hooked up with too many women (like, almost all of them villain or not), but he's pushing 40 and living with a college-aged guy, so I'm going with Bat-curious at least.

Wonder Woman's always been kinda bi in her various incarnations (comics and her TV show had hints). She was always about Steve and also had a run with Bats, but has always had a soft spot for some of the ladies from her home island. If memory serves, weren't the original writers/creators of Wonder Woman a bi couple? (too lazy to look it up, sorry).

My guess it'll be Firestorm, Hawk (repression-galore), Plastic Man, or Martian Manhunter.

On a related topic, Firestorm's face is on fire and he doesn't even care!!!

It can't be Plastic Man. DC has firmly established that Plas actually has no gender anymore. Can you really call someone "gay" who could instantly just give themselves a sex change, or even form into two loosely connected bodies who could then just have sex with each other?

Well, they are doing in in their "Earth 2" series, which is typical of DC. Whenever they do something really interesting to a character, they always do it in a parallel world or alternate dimension so they can just take it back whenever they like.

And it seems I was right, after all. It is one of the scrubs from the Justice Society, although I think it is a major stretch of the language to refer to Alan Scott as "iconic."

Plus, is anyone else amused that they chose the character whose official vulnerability is "wood" to be gay...?

TIL about a bunch of comic book characters I didn't even know existed. I knew the big ones, but Martian Manhunter? Plastic Man? What?

Anyway, this comment in the article made me laugh:

Well of course, this makes sense as he has a vulnerability to "Wood".

Martian Manhunter's been a part of the Justice League cartoons for the past decade. I'm not terribly familiar with comics, but I think that makes him a bit more than a minor character.

In fact, J'onn's been a member of the Justice League in almost every incarnation it's had, save for a couple of the most recent ones, starting way back in the '60s when the title began.

I take it you aren't a huge DC comics fan then?  Both of those characters are fairly old school and tend to pop up in various storylines within DCU.  Hell, J'onn was in a Green Lantern line that I was reading sometime recently.
