What do you mean "back in vogue"? Have you not been paying attention since...well, since the USA was founded, really? We may not be as obnoxious about it as the Brits and French were in their day, but imperialism is alive and well in American policy.
Well, I'm not American, so that's largely irrelevant to my interests. Besides, I was referring to proper, old-school imperialism. Sending in the troops to raise your flag in their former capital. Empire building through actual conquest. None of this pansy-ass neo-colonialism that you Americans seem so fond of these days.
