Just remember that you're standing on a planet that's evolving
And revolving at nine hundred miles an hour,
That's orbiting at nineteen miles a second, so it's reckoned,
A sun that is the source of all our power.
The sun and you and me and all the stars that we can see
Are moving at a million miles a day
In an outer spiral arm, at forty thousand miles an hour,
Of the galaxy we call the 'Milky Way'.
Our galaxy itself contains a hundred billion stars.
It's a hundred thousand light years side to side.
It bulges in the middle, sixteen thousand light years thick,
But out by us, it's just three thousand light years wide.
We're thirty thousand light years from galactic central point.
We go 'round every two hundred million years,
And our galaxy is only one of millions of billions
In this amazing and expanding universe.

The universe itself keeps on expanding and expanding
In all of the directions it can whizz
As fast as it can go, at the speed of light, you know,
Twelve million miles a minute, and that's the fastest speed there is.
So remember, when you're feeling very small and insecure,
How amazingly unlikely is your birth,
And pray that there's intelligent life somewhere up in space,
'Cause there's bugger all down here on Earth.

But what exactly IS the meaning of life?

If you look at it logically, cannibalism has great potential to simultaneously solve our overpopulation and food shortage problems.

Good catch :D

No idea... for me, I think John Godey said it best in his book (not the movie) The Taking of Pelham One Two Three, where a character named Ryder said "You live, and then you die."

But what exactly IS the meaning of life?
M-hmm. Well, it's nothing very special. Uh, try and be nice to people, avoid eating fat, read a good book every now and then, get some walking in, and try and live together in peace and harmony with people of all creeds and nations.
No matter what happens, no matter what my last words may end up being, I want everyone to claim that they were:
"If you strike me down, I shall become more powerful than you could possibly imagine."
Aww, you guys rock. :)  I feel the love... and the pitchforks and torches.  Tingly!

Hoplite, did you compose that piece of prose, that poem? I like it! We are all very, very lucky to be here and to be sentient. Existence and awareness with a sense of reason, and an innate (usually) sense of social empathy is a priceless gift of circumstance, whether you believe in god or not. Being even a tiny part of such grandeur as the universe is made up of gives meaning to existence, too.

I sympathize completely. However, to use against us. Let me ask you a troll. On the one who pulled it. But here's the question: where do I think it might as well have stepped out of all people would cling to a layman.

Also: The surviving Monty Python crew got together and filmed some commentary and talk about the Meaning of life and their other works.

Not at all. I watched Monty Python's The Meaning Of Life on Netflix last night, and I loved that song. The phrase "Can I have your liver, then?" also takes place in the same skit the song plays in.

I'd be more sympathetic if people here didn't act like they knew what they were saying when they were saying something very much wrong.

Patriarchy. </half-joking>

I know for a fact that my mother has mowed the yard more times than my father has.  And she's the one who has health problems.

My father's kind of a lazy patriarch.  Wants to be the head of the household, does nothing for the household.

And the only thing he can cook well is eggs.  Everything else either ends up drowned in grease, or somehow completely tasteless.  While drowned in grease.
Mockery of ideas you don't comprehend or understand is the surest mark of unintelligence.

Even the worst union is better than the best Walmart.

I hate it when I’m almost done committing Sudoku, and then find out I misplaced a number somewhere and have to start all over again.

Here is an old Finnish advertisement for amphetamine:

Translation:
"As spry as the morning - even after the midnight.

The refreshing effect of K-amphetamine is not just felt when taking it, but for long afterwards as well.

You can add effective hours to your day as well with the help of K-amphetamine.

Only available from the privately ownded shops in your area."

Times have changed. These days you wouldn't advertise amphetamine with the picture of an old lady.
