Quote
The partner of the journalist who first reported on the mass surveillance by the U.S. National Security Agency was detained at London's Heathrow Airport on Sunday and questioned for hours under Britain's anti-terrorism law, according to the Guardian newspaper.

American writer Glenn Greenwald, who broke revelations by whistleblower Edward Snowden in a series of articles for the London-based Guardian, called the treatment of his partner, David Miranda, "despotic."

"This is obviously a rather profound escalation of their attacks on the news-gathering process and journalism," Greenwald wrote in a blog post. "It's bad enough to prosecute and imprison sources. It's worse still to imprison journalists who report the truth.

"But to start detaining the family members and loved ones of journalists is simply despotic. Even the Mafia had ethical rules against targeting the family members of people they felt threatened by."

...

"They completely abused their own terrorism law for reasons having nothing whatsoever to do with terrorism, a potent reminder of how often governments lie when they claim that they need powers to stop 'the terrorists.' "

The fuck? Even if one considers Snowden's actions to be criminal, this dude was just a reporter stating the facts (and thus should be protected by the First Amendment), not an accomplice in Snowden's leaks.

Except the guy in question was detained in the UK under UK law.

Derp, my bad for not reading more closely.

Does the UK have protected free speech though?

The UK's constitution is basically entirely unwritten. Parliament can pretty much do whatever the hell it wants, though EU courts have ruled that UK laws that violate EU treaties are unenforceable.

That said, this is clearly America calling this one in, and may everyone behind it give oral sex to bleeding AIDS infected genitalia of the sex they dislike (or for bisexuals and pansexuals, of an extremely unattractive member of either sex). Or in other worse, please go straight to hell. Do not pass go. Do not collect $200.

Actually it's not clear, it could be that. Or it could be the UK government acting on it's own. Some of the documents that were leaked were bad for the UK government. I'm pretty sure there was evidence that were tapping major internet backbones going though the UK(don't have time to go find articles about it now). I do know for sure there were documents leaked that showed they were spying on trade partners at a G8, 11, or 20 summit a couple of years ago in order to work out trade deals that were more beneficial for the UK. In the end we'll probably never know.

It's worth pointing out he hasn't been charged with anything, he was stopped under one of those general-purpose 'terrorism' acts and then let go. After stealing his laptop, cellphone, et al.

They didn't leak anything. Snowdon, under the tutelage of Assange and possibly a mole or traitor  in the higher ranks of the nsa  conspired to obtain and release said classified information to foreign governments. Snowden defected. Greenwald is not a US resident. Assange is a money grubbing control freak and fame seeker.

It's called espionage.

That's all well and good, but the journalist wasn't detained. His partner was detained.

As in an innocent person who has no bearing on the investigation apart from being in a relationship with one of the people involved.
Still can't think of a signature a year later.

Read the WaPo. Snowden confessed to everything. The rest is logic.
