It can be sensible depending on the person. Along with now having the possibility of being associated with someone they don't like, they may take the same position for different reasons. If someone wants the same laws or responses as you but do it for bigoted purposes (like wanting interracial marriage to try and muddy the gene pool and reduce the white population), you obviously don't want them to be on your side.

Yeah, I had some major writer's block until I came up with this one idea for the Padme/Palpatine shipping fic
