Weren't the ronin just samurai who left because their masters were douchebags?  I get the whole Japanese honour system thing, but a lot of daimyo were dicks.

Sure, but if your job description is "being good at killing people" and you no longer have that job, you're probably going to take another job where being good at killing people is useful. Most of those jobs don't exactly make you a pillar of the community

Because the former samurai could not legally take up a new trade, or because of pride were loath to do so, many rōnin looked for other ways to make a living with their swords. Those rōnin who desired steady, legal employment became mercenaries that guarded trade caravans, or bodyguards for wealthy merchants. Many other rōnin became criminals, operating as bandits and highwaymen, or joining organized crime in towns and cities. Rōnin were known to operate, or serve as hired muscle for gangs that ran gambling rings, brothels, protection rackets, and other similar activities. Many were petty thieves and muggers. Indeed, the word ronin just means "samurai without a lord". While many ronin did become bandits, the closest possible equivalent would be to say that they're free agents in the samurai equivalent of the NFL.

Also, since we're finally talking about the Sengoku era, Of a Nobunaga did nothing wrong.
